The world creation aspects aren't that far off, the bigger problem comes with things like visual tracking, haptic feedback and shit like that. Also, the cost for content creation in VR environments is astronomical compared to other environments due to the higher interactivity (for example, all objects need to be textured and shaded from all degrees of access unless you want to artificially limit the explore space).
You basically need Facebook to plunk down 10 billion for content to make substantial movement. AR is much more likely to take off because of the huge curve to get VR up and running and the unwillingness of large stakeholders to blindly invest in content.
