How do you break into this at places like CBRE, Cushman, etc? What is the compensation like?
Will they take self loathing ex-lawyers looking to escape the law?

You have to be kinda smart. If you're smart enough to be a lawyer, you could def do commercial RE.
The money is excellent, if you are good. Doing Class A office space will make you millions. If you're selling warehouses composed of decaying brick and corrugated pipe in Newark as a spacious office "in need of TLC" maybe not as much.

OFS. Many are ex lawyers, bankers, lots of MBAs especially, in RE or finance.
Many do work as advisors, it's true on many different things. How to reduce real estate costs, manage property taxes, sustainability is *so* hot right now.
The structure is extremely varied, there are so many different kinds of positions available. It's not a strict tier system where you "move up" like finance, there are so many different areas.
Start by applying to firms, maybe smaller ones, prove yourself, get clients and move to bigger firms. It's possible for anyone to do really, if you have the motivation. But you have to be hungry and chase opportunities. It's mainly about relationships and focusing and becoming a super expert on one area, even one neighborhood.
