My biggest impression of the coverage I did take in was that too many of the reporters were trying to explain a situation that required a fair amount of nuance without fully understanding it. |

I watched about 60% of the trial and was just shocked. I was always conservative and always thought the media was biased but I still believed facts mattered. Not after that trial. Also I was appalled at the NYT editorial the day after the acquittal. They wrote a long piece about how Stand Your Ground Laws need to be repealed even though the trial had nothing to do with that. |

Media covered up the fact that Trayvon was bigger than Zimmerman (used the innocent 12 year old boy pictures). They ignored the fact that Zimmerman was badly beaten (never showed the bloody head pic the cops took at the scene). |

In the case of Trayvon, his family and their "spokesperson" seemed to be particularly adept at manipulating this aspect of cable news to generate favorable coverage, and eventually after about a month Dumbass Obama took the bait and opened his mouth in support of them. This made all the liberal sheep fall in line and ensured cable news were in the tank for a conviction, which meant that XO was one of the few places you could go where people seemed to be actually discussing the facts of the case and considering the likely outcomes.
I would be talking to all my lib friends who were so confused after the verdict, and they would all immediately begin bleating about Stand Your Ground. It blew their minds when you'd take out your phone and show them Zimmerman waived Stand Your Ground and just argued self-defense. It was pretty crazy, but LOL at the millennials on this site who previously thought that cable news was an upstanding institution in our society that always fights for truth and objectivity. I'm really worried how they will react when they find out about what cable news was like in the run up to the Iraq War. |
