for your company and got fired? Like chase a shoplifter into the parking lot and kick his ass, and then cause the company to get sued?

We had a dumb black kid working for us as a stocker a few years ago who got in that exact situation. Kid was 6'2" and probably 300 lbs., and decided to be a security guard of sorts despite our repeated warnings that he behave himself. He had gotten into a series of altercations with shoplifters -- I had long since stopped approaching them or caring -- and was told that he had one in a head lock on the floor for allegedly concealing some cheap crap. I was off when it happened, but saw him cleaning out his locker the following day. I literally told him five or six times not to chase people or detain them, but his almond-sized brain refused this simple request. Last I heard, he was living in a car or "with a friend" somewhere.

That's part of the problem. I've defended people charged with felony shoplifting (grand theft in FL starts at $300, which doesn't have to be taken all at once if they claim it was part of a scheme) and it's absurd how little they actually care about it. Going through the motions ends up costing them more than it's worth the majority of the time, especially when they pay employees for depositions/court and whatnot. Roughing shoplifters up is a much better solution.
