when "classic rock" became a radio format in the late-80's, the standard was usually songs that were 15+ years old. so, in 1988, they'd focus on songs from 1973 and earlier.

by that standard, classic rock begins in 2003, which means bands like Fall Out Boy and Evanescence should be making their classic rock radio debuts this year.

The other day I was at Five Guys, where a rotation of early 90s alternative and hard rock was playing. The passage of time pulls the teeth of rebellion and transgression, making music safe for elevators and franchisees. An early 20s couple sat at the table next to mine, and just after the protagonist of "Jeremy" gnashed his teeth and bit the recess lady's breast, the manlet grumbled his distaste for the song. This was her time to shine: "actually, Nirvana is one of the most important grunge bands; I really like them."
