one time i bought a computer chair from this guy moving out of his mcmansion. i got there and there was a a bunch of stuff they were trying to get rid of so i asked about a side table, he proposed a price and i counter-offered. he said he had ask "the wife" and ran around the house trying to find her to get permission on the price.

I use this as an excuse to end the call or delay a purchase. I think many people do this. They aren't necessarily seeking their wife's permission; they just don't want to make a decision on the spot, something any sales rep wants.

Exactly. My wife doesn't care, but it's a can't-argue-much-with excuse for delaying a decision.

CR. LOL @ OP not realizing this is a gold negotiation move. Talk down a salesman to get a real price on something and then "oops, gonna have to run it by my wife first".

"Good" salesmen may know this but that's no reason not to use the tactic offensively.

A car salesman called me about my lease, said something about their president's day sale, I said I wasn't ready and was going to wait, he said "Well, it will be more expensive later." That really pissed me off. How does pissing me off get him a sale? I will never buy from that pindick.
