That is me. And I act as a bridge between technical teams and other lawyers/business units while also doing the more technical legal work (not including patent shit, which we have a separate group for). I also do policy work and assist lobbyists among a number of other hats I wear.

The bad news with this is that I have to be both a legal and technical expert, and the technical side is very cert heavy. The really good news is that I could leave law entirely and get a nice salary pretty much anywhere in the world with my technical specialization.

The problem with first year biglaw isn't the pay, it is the lifestyle and the fact that it isn't sustainable (plus, the work is shit). Plus, combine that with the fact that most are fresh out of law school and have the debt that comes with that. For most of the country and the world that is a massive amount of money. In-house that is a solid salary. For comp sci people that's director-level comp.

A very small percentage of grads get that money. I work in a company that employes tens of thousands of CS people and we very rarely pay that (again, that's director level comp for us). Yes, there are a few SV/Seattle places that pay that but those jobs are the equivalent to biglaw.

Here's what CS pay looks like, starting at the very top: https://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report/best-schools-by-majors/computer-science

Acting like everyone in CS who is remotely competent gets $200k+ is completely ignorant.

Most CS people aren't getting large amounts of RSUs. You're hyper-focused on a tiny segment of people. This would be like if I were telling people that if you just were a SCOTUS clerk things would be pretty good.

Just inherit a bunch of money, pretend that you're an entrepreneur and engage in poorly-thought-out but cool-sounding "business ideas" that never pan out.

Most of your money will be locked up in investments to support GC while a little bit of your money will "trickle down" and BOOM, you have a job that does good for society.

all i know is that my industry (accounting) is going to be fucked in the coming decades, which is why im trying to do something to get out.

too much of what accountants do on a day to day basis is rote, repetitive, and tedious -- tasks that are absolutely ripe for automation. that's going to take away a good 50% of accounting jobs currently out there.

i hear all these reports about how "oh AI won't destroy jobs in accounting, it will free us up to focus on higher level tasks." well, that's all well and good, except ppl are forgetting that it's going to take FEWER FUCKING ACCOUNTANTS to do the job with automation than it used to, so THOSE accountants still employed will be the ones focused on higher-level tasks.

basically a bunch of ppl are trying to console themselves that their jobs are not going to be automated out of existence and that the acctg profession will be fine. it's fucking bullshit.

i know my industry is not the only one.

you all better figure out a plan for the future or else you're going to be fucked

i think this is wrong

our generation is going to be deeply affected. all of this major change is going to happen in the next 10-20 years they are saying, if not sooner.

we're fucked, but i do agree that the next generation (our children) are even more fucked. like, the next generation is almost incomparably fucked.

we're going to have a permanent underclass, i don't think there is a fucking way out of this. and even with the proposed "universal basic income," that is still going to create a situation of tremendous haves and TREMENDOUS have nots. and it almost seems social mobility is going to be INCREDIBLY difficult in the future.

i just don't see any way around this outcome.

i could be wrong. but i've not heard one argument that makes me feel differently

now see, this i agree with. you're not going to be able to automate journalism. i actually think the creative arts are going to be safe too for a very long time. so either specialize in the arts or become a programmer in the future

oh - one other thing that i forgot to mention in my OP is this nonsense notion of the 8 hour work day

i would imagine almost all white collar professionals these days do not actually work an 8 hour work day. it's mostly 8 hours of facetime, and 1-2, maybe 3 hours of actual work. yet more proof that our whole system is bullshit fraudlies

i think it's the opposite in law in general - most people work legit 12+ hour days

explain the scores of threads of biglaw burnouts who admitted to padding the fuck out of their hours on the REG and admitted to doing 1-2 hours of actual work per day

if they were only working 1-2 hours of actual work a day they wouldn't burn out

when i did biglaw i prob averaged 60-70 in office hours a week, billing maybe 50 hours of that

youd get fired within one year if you were barely working

While not "important" in the grand scheme of things, I have very specific knowledge in a niche subject that is not easily machine learnable. Companies pay big bucks for a couple hours of my time, and the majority of my job is just traveling to customer sites. Maybe an hour or two of actual work is enough

in most cases to see a payoff for them.
