About 1- compensation and 2- promotion.

Been here at company for 6 years. Told when I started that I'd be eligible for a promotion around year 5. Last year, my boss said I'd be getting more administrative responsibilities similar to someone in that position. But when I pushed for the official promotion, boss said that it was a tough time politically to push a promotion through. So here I am a year later, still in the dark about their intentions - whether to promote me or not.

Also my comp is behind my peers - prob by 20-30k. I know this by picking up on conversations with other folks.

Honestly I find it scary to directly bring up these topics at annual reviews. Usually in these reviews, I get told that I'm doing a great job, that I was rated a "x", that my bonus will be "y" and that my new comp will be "z". I've never had the courage to ask the more tough questions- such as where they see me fitting into the legal dept in the next few years, or anything else to really push my own agenda forward

Any suggestions would be helpfil

Go big or go home. OP will either get everything he wants or he'll realize that he's not appreciated at his current company and will never accomplish what he wants there.

If not flame you’re doing it wrong. If flame, terrible flame.

Go ask for promotion again with your value at your fingertips. If political pushback, you say, when I undertook this assignment and was given a 5 year window (way too long so I know flame) there was no mention of politics being associated with that process. I worked hard and meet the criteria and deserve “this” promotion.

In re: to compensation- that’s a tougher nut to crack (in one shot) to make up the gap btw peers, but ask for a significant raise to be paired with promotion.

It’s ok to be scared, but you want an answer. You don’t have to leave your comfort zone in tone. But you listed your exact gripes. And that’s fair and it’s more rewarding for your mental health to ask then not.

Think back to a time when something seemed difficult and when you were in the other side of it, you kicked yourself for dragging your feet.

If you have another offer great, but I don’t bluff.

I've done this repeatedly with multiple bosses. Got a major raise out of it, but not directly (happened after someone else in our group left and they recalled my bitching).

no one gets substantial raises anymore, they know they can replace you in 2 weeks (and probably pay the next wagecuck even less)

honestly, if they're not promoting you on the schedule they've told you, the only thing you can do is go out and get a better job offer and try and leverage it against this one to get them to match or better it

I agree with this advice. I got those same promises for several years as well and never spoke up. They will keep doing it. The best way to advance is to have the courage to change companies (after you get your bonus of course).

Stop doing anything at work, and start lining up your next job. Once they notice you haven't done any work in months, give your notice and jump ship to a better offer.

Update: 10 min before my review , boss cancels it and moves it to another day when he'll be traveling. So instead of an in person discussion, I'm supposed to call him and have the review while he's remote. Kinda stupid bc now it'll be nearly impossible to have a fruitful/substantive discussion over the phone. Meanwhile, in the time slot of my original review, he's in there just gossiping with some other exec. Whatever - I'm going to pursue other employment options.
