Interesting.
Can you be a Catholic and deny, say, Virgin birth or Jesus' resurrection?
Can you be a Christian and deny the resurrection?

I think there is some room for equivocation also.
But --the difficulty that I have--is there are at least a handful of definitional beliefs you have to have to be a Christian--not least of which is that there is a God --not a sim maker or anything like that--but an actual god who seems to correlate in some respect with the described god of the new testament.
It seems to me that this has to be demonstrated as Probable before any other musings or analysis or critical thought even matters on the subject. And I just don't see how this has been done. There's some circular self-referential posturing and assertions about the need for "faith" in lieu of evidence, but that's ... a whole other gloss.

you're probably thinking of things and thinking of "reality" in very limited, very narrow epistemic terms. a lot of the more complex philosophy of religion deals with a different set of epistemic premises. to draw an analogy, let's say that "reality" has aspects of a simulation or a psuedo-simulation. in that case, what "is" is a programmable function, and there are systems in which the behavior of a "character" actually helps program the simulation (genetic algorithms, etc.).
so in that sense, a religious "belief" can be seen not as an attempt to stake a claim to a "truth" in a fixed epistemic universe (which is probably the level at which your epistemic thinking is focused), but rather, an attempt to bring the self into alignment with a NEW reality; an emergent reality which is produced IN CONCORDANCE with the belief.
these are massive oversimplifications, but you can see how this sort of thinking is a lot more complex than most critics of religion would realize.
