Was Star Wars at $4 billion really that good of a deal?

Disney probably only nets like 10% of the gross on this stuff. The movies cost a shitload, and then you have all of their overhead and shit, plus the cost to buy reviews (i.e. "marketing").
I guess since they have Toy Rights, this is all moot, but still. So the Films are an outlet for marxist propaganda and the Toys are the moneymakers? How many fuckin toys are there really? How much does Disney get when an incel buys an $800 lego millenium falcon?

You have to think about it over the long run and the various revenue streams.
1. One movie per year.
2. At least one video game per year.
3. All the merchandising, merchandising, merchandising (thanks Mel Brooks).
That said, Disney has fucked it up by letting idiots run the franchise so no, all that still won't ever result in a good ROI.

I would have loved to have been in the Disney board room when they pitched this.
"We'll take Star Wars, add in characters representing all genders and nationalities to appeal to a GLOBAL audience, and release a new movie every year for the next 20 years until we've bled the entire franchise to death. We expect to get a 25% ROIC."

they also generate significant revenue in various relicensing deals and such for many years.
LMAO, XO is so unbelievably bad at discussing business, econ, investing, anything. so typical of aspie-ville.
yes guys, what a total dog of an extremely lucrative investment because they took franchise in a shitlib direction. how dare they appeal to young people!

"I am assuming that they turn like a 10% profit on these when all is said and done" you seem dumb and you're clearly just pulling that number from your ass.
1) non sequitur's math makes a lot more sense than yours. industry standard assumption is that a film is profitable in theaters if its total (incl international) revenue is > 3-3.5x production budget, which the last movie easily satisfies. this does not include revenue from DVD sales/rentals, i.e. TLJ presumably started delivering a hard dollar profit after it crossed $700mm theater receipts. sales/rentals will be another $400mm+ which is all gravy.
2) "They have a ton of overhead that isn't accounted for in the 'budget' of these films that is completely inestimable and could be extravagant." Again, either you're pulling this out of thin air or your statement would apply equally to basically any big budget action film (MCU, Star Trek franchise, etc), which is not, by itself, a persuasive reason to assume standard industry metrics per 1 don't apply. Also your completely amorphous "number numbers they don't tell the whole story" bullshit cuts both ways. Disney is likely to realize additional revenue and profit from the star wars brand that's difficult to calculate but still contributes to the bottom line. For example, adding Star Wars rides and attractions to Disney theme parks will almost certainly increase ticket sales to their parks, even though it's difficult to calculate just how many marginal tickets are being sold to guests who otherwise wouldn't pay $400/head to stand around in line at some theme park in FL/CA.

They paid $4 billion. So far they've released 3 movies which have made $4 billion. They are making like 6 more movies as we speak. They are making TV shows and cartoons. The president of Canada wears Star Was socks. Petco is filled with Star Wars dog toys. They are building a giant Star Wars wing of Disney World.
How can you not think it's a great deal for Disney? Star Wars is basically the licensing equivalent of "red" at this point. "Does your kid want a red backpack or a Star Wars backpack?" "Do you want a red USB storage or a Star Wars USB storage?" "Do you want a red mailbox or a Star Wars mailbox?"

So far this acquisition has been complete garbage. Disney still hasn't felt the full effects of how atrocious Star Wars 8 was.
8 was utter PC trash that dramatically underperformed at the box office. It could very well ruin their company.

Someday they'll rerelease the original versions of the original trilogy and make a killing on that.
A lot of people here just don't get they bought a lot more than the right to make new SW movies for 4bn
