Yeah but I've been and I'm not Japanese and this is something Japanese experience because they see French culture/Paris as the absolute height of refinement and then, of course, it's not.

Yeah I'm not talking about commonalities, these are my three favorites. In terms of the mix of food, culture, vibe, sights, these three are just my absolute favorites. It's little things like blue Parisian rooftops, NYC bagels, how when stores close in Tokyo they play the New Years song, it's hard to explain but these three are the best.

A lot of people have an idealized vision of Paris that isn't the reality obviously, but Paris does have a magic to it I very much enjoy. You can see why it's attracted artists and writers for hundreds of years to call it home.

Well you started off handicapping NYC its arguably biggest problems, both of which happen to also be problems Tokyo doesn't have. To the contrary, Tokyo has no blacks and its train system is the envy of the world; it is incredible.

Tokyo is just more intense in almost every way. You want cultural heritage sites? There are thousand year old temples. Want green space? Their gardens are unmatched and you won't get mugged in one. Want skyscrapers? Multiple districts full of them. Shopping? Try huge underground malls with restaurant caliber food courts. Nerd shit? Akihabara has no equivalent. Times Square is a kitschy joke compared to the neon glitter of Tokyo. The list goes on and on.

Agreed. Just saying if you are going based on what is the most "lively" city, they are batshit insane levels of activity. They make Times Square or Rockefeller Center at Christmas feel like Boise.

Tokyo is one of the most densely populated cities in on the planet and it is fucking immaculately clean/organized and filled exclusively with polite people. It feels like the exact opposite of New York. It is so clean and punctual it makes Switzerland look like a shithold. It is the most glaring example of the drawbacks of having a multicultural society.

Are we ranking cities based on how objectively great they are, or on subjective enjoyment?

Like, some of the cities I remember most fondly are smaller cities that I had low expectations for, but who significantly exceeded those low expectations.

What the fuck do you mean "impenetrable"? Paris is much more walkable than London. With the exception of the champs elysees during a big event, I've never felt like the sidewalks in Paris were too small. (Thanks, Haussmann!) And they did a much better job of not letting cars take over than London, where it feels like there are metal barriers all over the place.
