sports are voluntary extracurricular activities. the "student-athletes" are - first and foremost - STUDENTS. if the chess club members (or whatever else) aren't getting paid, why should members of school sports clubs/teams?

if the student athletes feel as though they are being ripped off by the universities, they are of course free to quit their teams and just be normal students.

no. schools make billions from sports, athletes should be allowed to make money commensurate with their talent + get 'free' schooling. and it's not a "free quality college education" because the rest of the student body subsidizes athletes through higher rates.

If they "should" be getting paid, then they are free to refuse to play until they are getting paid. If they're stupid enough to do the economically valuable work of being a college athlete for no pay, why would anyone ever pay them?

in the case of elite athletes, there's amateurism rules that prevent entry into professional leagues until one completes some schooling. college sports are basically a minor league without adequate compensation in many cases.

Who's forcing them to pursue entry into professional leagues? If they all refused to play college sports without compensation, the professional leagues would have no choice but to set up their own minor leagues with compensation. Seems like simple economics.

If they don't want to play then they don't have to. Education costs are sky high and you want to spend yet more money on these retards?

It wouldn't work anyway. They would get title IX pwnd if they didn't also pay the Women's basketball team or whatever. And they don't bring in jack shit. The best solution is to just allow players to profit from their name and image. Let them sign shoe deals and sell autographs and do advertisements.

I would support that solution.

Why would Title IX matter if compensation was higher for some athletes than others? If all athletes are getting education + X stipend, how is Title IX violated if the elite athletes are getting some multiple of X?

The fans are cheering for the laundry, D League teams would wipe the floor with most college teams, how many fans are interested in following the D League?

The colleges are creating all the economic value, they might as well capture the economic rewards

Resources are finite, why give it to the athletes? If they think playing in the D League or overseas somewhere is a better deal, let them do that.

Lots of occupations have licensing regulations that limit how people can sell their labor, why should I feel especially concerned about the plight of athletes?

As a society, athletes are really low on the list of classes of people we're screwing over

Are all libertarians retarded and autistic or just most? All of this "if you don't like it, quit" misses the point that all of the colleges are colliding together in the NCAA to make a system for their benefit. Why do libertarians so consistently miss obvious issues of monopoly? They should be paid and they would be if there were a real free market and not a cartel. Do libertarians think it's coincidental that colleges are the sources of insane shitlibbery, absurdly high prices, and athletes that deliver billion in value without any income? Retarted and autistic

baseball players have the most professional options. but so do bball players.

some NCAA athletes have none, but is that a rationale that colleges have to pay student athletes?

a "monopoly" in what? non-professional athletics? what does that even mean? all college athletes are entitled to a paying athletic job?

These guys do get paid. A lot.

- free tuition and chance at a free college degree

- free hous8ng for four or five years

- literally unlimited food for four or five years

- literally unlimited pussy for four or five years

- free paid tutors. Many big time programs even have people who sit in class with athletes and take notes FOR them. These athletes get every advantage to get ahead

- schools find ways to “pay” athletes too. They often disguise it by giving them too much money for books (allowing them to pocket the rest), giving them like $150/day for food stipend when traveling for the school, etc. I was on the track team and the scholarship dudes literally got checks from the school that even they had no idea what for

- boosters give all sorts of cool perks, trips, dinners, etc to big time athletes, sometimes even cash under the table

In short, they have it good. Better than any of us.
