some people get 170+ by superstudying from a 155 or a 150 or sometimes even a 145. Most 170s probably started in the 160s. Would you expect the latter group to get better law school grades than the former, assuming each group works equally as hard in law school? It seems reasonable. But some people might think that the former group gained actual skills/ability and made up for whatever mental deficit they started with such that their 170+ is equal in every sense to a more "natural" 170+ and that there is no reason to expect any difference in average law school grades.

do people actually get 170+ starting from 145? seems extremely unlikely

yes, 145 -> 170 happens, but like you said, it's highly unusual because it takes like 2+ years and most people don't want to spend that long studying.

look at the AMAs. most studied over a year. multiple people took it 3 times, at least one took it 4 times. one guy got a 171 after half a year, then studied another half a year, canceled a score, studied for ANOTHER half a year, then got 177.

Depending on GPA, those six points are the difference between 100k+ loans at good school and no loans. Not a bad haul for a year’s work if you’re a lib arts major.

I superstudied my way to an 11 point increase from my first, all-natural practice LSAT and then got terrible grades in law school. OTOH, I did not put anywhere near as much work studying for my law school classes as I did studying for the LSAT.

I have no idea wtf influences grades... is it genetic? I have never felt like I had much influence. I don't think that idiots can superstudy their way through school like every day is the super bowl, they'd just burnout. But people who seem like idiots can ace school because it's their genetic destiny to ace their way through school while seeming like idiots.... they're like "sleeper" cars.

no, it's extremely rare. it would happen with any curriculum, given enough time. and they basically have anyone who makes that kind of jump do some kind of AMA. so it's just a handful of people out of thousands who are studying like hell. but 7sage ethos is superstudying to the extreme. "don't take it until you've been averaging above what you want." this attitude was unheard of 10 years ago - people just took it once or twice and then went to wherever they got in.

hit 170 the second time. my legit timed pt's often got to 175. the last pt I took before the 164 was a 175. I started thinking H. performance anxiety I guess. If I could go back I would wish for a 140 though so that law school was not an option.

I graduated college in 4 1/2 years and took like a year and a half between college and law school off. I studied and did testmasters during my last quarter of college. Then I had probably 2 months where I did NOTHING but study for the LSAT. So I guess like 1 1/2 to 2 months of doing nothing but studying he LSAT and the full testmasters course on top, but I don't remember how long that was. I also wasn't studying hard for it at that point, just keeping up with the class and taking good notes. I did a lot of more repetition work in the time after. If I had to guess I'd say 4 months of studying.

I can't predict what score I would have gotten if I studied a few more months. I was consistently testing in the low to mid 170s before the actual test though. I honestly don't know if I could have mentally handled studying LSATs for a few more months. I just wanted to be done with that and my apps so I could make some side cash and enjoy my free time before law school.

CR. I missed half the logic games questions, but everywhere else I was solid. I recall testmasters breaking down a few of the logical reasoning questions where I wasn't thinking about things right, and that bumped me up a decent amount, but the majority of my big jump came from knowing how to do games.

“Different 170+ scorers take different amounts of time: I've seen everything from about 3 to 24 months. There is something that all top scorers do have in common though: Disciplined, high level study strategies”

These people are nuts. Almost no one who scores that high studied that long.

it might take a year of practice to make a certain way of thinking automatic. also, some people underperform multiple times and keep trying until they get a score they like.

To put a month into some perspective, I've been studying for a year now and I'm not even close to prepared for the June test, I'm hoping I'll be ready for September. And that's not weird, that's actually pretty common especially among top scorers. This test is a monster and if you don't respect it, it will make you pay.

So really, it just depends on your goals. What are you trying to do? If what you want to do requires a strong LSAT score, then I really hope you will reconsider.

I started studying for the LSAT in July of 2014 with a plan to take the test in June 2015 at the very earliest. My expectations, it turned out, were very well-managed. To be honest, I didn’t start out with this mindset because I was following sage advice—I more or less stumbled into this process with the assumption that I had a long way to go. I also knew that I would need to get a very high score on a test that a lot of really smart people take—a test that happens also to be curved. I was a tadpole in a pool teeming with very big fish. I knew I had a lot of catching up to do (or I assumed I did at least). And when I wasn't ready to take the test in June, I pushed it to October. Then I retook it in December, and once more in February (the third time was the charm!). All in all, the process took over a year and a half. But when I got into the law school of my dreams with a handsome scholarship, I saw all of that effort pay off. It's worth it to take your sweet time studying for this test.

Low and slow (like good Texas brisket). The mindset I described above translated to a “low and slow” approach. I started out studying only a few hours a week; after a month or so, I increased to 10 or so hours, then up to 15, and in the full swing of prep, I was studying about 30 hours per week while working full time (that lasted about 2 months). Once I started taking prep tests (on average, 2 per week for about 6 months), my hours spent studying per week decreased to account for the increased intensity of this kind of focused work. Instead of trying to “brute force” my prep as some students do (I often hear about folks studying more than 40 hours per week, hoping to take the test within a few months), I ramped up slowly, made sure I understood concepts deeply, and then took a huge number of LSAT prep tests (all in all, I took over 70 tests, many of them retakes). If I were to quantify the hours I spent studying in terms of scholarship offer and future employment prospects—well, let's just say that it was time very, very well-spent.

Superstduying for a year, probably would struggle in law school, yeah, although I'd never heard of that. But normal superstudying, probably not - that dedication is valuable in law school as well. I always got top standardized tests and mediocre grades, cuz grinding is more important for classes(though I did solid 1L, since it was more like standardized tests).

as noted above, grades have more to do with superstudying than talent.

I would expect someone who got a 170 through superstudying to get a higher gpa in LS than someone who got a 170 with no studying.

top grades requires moderate studying and high IQ. you need to study enough to know the material; lazy smart people who dont put in anywhere near enough time will do shitty. on the other hand, superstudying has diminishing returns after a certain point.

the middle of the class is filled with superstudy grinders.

Depends on what classes you take. Transactional classes are undersubscribed and not subject to the curve, nor are seminars, so trannies are getting B+s and A-s in all their classes, while retarded shiTTTigators are languishing in B and B+ black letter land.

i assume OP is asking about 1L classes where you have the entire class all trying to do their best, and my poast applies to that.

2L/3L grades are subject to so many variables -- the ones you identify, minorities taking ____ studies bullshit to boost their GPAs, people slacking off once they get biglaw early in 2L fall semester, etc.

the 2L and 3L classes I found the most interesting and thus took tended to be filled with gunners (1st Amendment, both Crim Pro classes, Fed Courts) that probably produced a tougher curve than the 1L classes.

i should have just taken contract drafting classes because i dont remember any of this shit now anyway.

see, this is where gunners are retarded. they should just gun for high grades with a carefully crafted schedule rather than take the classic 2L/3L gunner classes.

i wanted to protect my 1L grades and not risk getting mediocre 2L grades, so i avoided all the gunner classes. i didnt take fucking fed courts and still got lots of COA interviews. taking all those gunner classes is utterly retarded.

I tried to do that, choosing classes purely by highest average grades, but ended up getting lower grades in bullshit seminars than in 1L curved classes, because there were no objective criteria at all. Obviously I'm not a gunner, though, and they'd probably thrive.

True. Seminars at CCN are an easy B+.

I've seen GULC transcripts (lots of transfers just abandon their resumes and transcripts around campus), and their seminars are in fact easy A-s.

But if you're at GULC stacking up on seminars, chances are you struck out.

Hey all,

I've been studying for the LSAT for more or less than a year and I've been stuck in this 165 phase for about 7 months now. My initial diagnostic was a 143, but now I'm getting anywhere from about -3/6 on LR sections, -5/7 on RC and -0/2 on LG. I'm a slow reader and I can't seem to get inference questions right on RC. For LR, I'm also missing the inference/MBT questions the most, and some sufficient assumption questions. I've also taken all PTs from 1-71 and probably taken it more than once or twice at this point.

I've only very recently (1 month now) been going back and reviewing/re-solving the questions I got wrong, on a different day (I give it about a week).

Books I've Used:

Powerscore LR

Manhattan LR

Manhattan RC

I also took a Kaplan course before I really started studying for the LSAT.

I'm really not sure what to do at this point... If I keep reviewing the way I'm reviewing now, will my score improve? Or is a 165 my max potential and I'm maxed out now? Any other study tips will also be helpful. ALSO if someone can tell me how they study when they buy their Manhattan LR book and what's the most efficient way to study it/review it.

Thanks in advance!!

Plateauing at 164, started at a 144 in June, so I'm stoked on the improvement. My goal is to get a 170+ on the June LSAT, so I want to be PTing above a 170 really really soon. I need advice on what to do. I know a lot of you who got a 170+ score probably were stuck in a plateau for a long time. I really want to know how you handled to situation and what you did to get over the hump. Obviously, the specifics will be different for each person, so I just want to know how you personally handled the situation.
