Not a full-blown TRAVELPIG but I'm heading to Lithuania and Moldova in a few months, then laying over for a few days in Amsterdam, Manchester, and Stockholm to visit some friends. Then I'm heading to the woods, alone, for 2 or 3 months. looking forward to that the most if we're being honest.

180, what are your plans for Lithuania and Moldova. Have been to both and can offer suggestions if needed. Are you going to hit DAT Transnistria or Gagauzia when you're in Moldova?

yes to transnistria, have been strongly urged by a few friends to see it. Not sure about Gagauzia, might as well since it's such a small country.

Mostly curious what the best places to eat are - But if there's any real must-sees I'm open to suggestions. I probably could use them since I'm allergic to tour guides etc.

I didn't make it to Gagauzia but would be interested to hear about it. Transnistria was pretty cool. In Chisinau, based on flipping through some old photos, big Cathedral in the main park, park itself, Arch of Triumph (over what?) in the park, Stefan Cel Mare statue in the park, national history museum was pretty good, milestii mici winery (do the tour of the underground tunnels and wine cellars they have 1.5mm bottles stored in 34 miles of underground tunnels), WW2 memorial, near that there's a monument to the '89-'92 war with Transnistria, there's an OK military museum with some rusting Soviet equipment.

I went to a place called La Taifas for local food, it was pretty good I think. Placinte and mamaliga are some of the main local dishes.

To get to Tiraspol, buses leave from the central market in Chisinau, it's pretty easy to figure out and a short drive. They do their own border control for Transnistria, but it's not a big deal and no one tried to shake me down for a bribe.

In Tiraspol, Suvorov Square, across the street there's a small church with an old T-34 and a war memorial for the war with Moldova, the main street is 25 October pretty much everything is on that. There's the Supreme Soviet with a Lenin statue holding it down outside, Palace of the Soviets with a Lenin bust out front, and in another part of town a mounted MiG-19 as some sort of monument to fighter pilots.

Make sure your hotel registers you with the militia or they will shake you down for $ when you leave the country. If it's the right time, they also have a soccer team Sheriff Tiraspol that's supposed to be pretty good.

I can post pictures of some of this stuff if you like, it's def a cool trip to do though.

The tunnels are very impressive, unfortunately the wine is not so good. Are you going to make it up to Latvia from Lithuania? There is an old WW3 bunker hidden under a rest home in Ligatne, about 45 minutes from Riga that is available for tours if you arrange in advance and has pretty much been left untouched since the end of USSR, it's 180 if you like that sort of thing. For sure go to the KGB museum in Vilnius in addition to the other non-Soviet stuff there and go out of the city to Trakai to see the castle there if you have time. I will try to find a 180 Lithuanian place I had dinner at where they serve beaver stew. Also ceppolini (spelling?) are pretty CR.

Beaver stew sounds even more 180 than reindeer burgers (I'm quite sure you can guess where I am now from that one).

And I assumed as much re: the wine, I'm not much of a wino so it's no great loss. If I go by motorcycle or car I'll definitely run through a few other countries, I'm a real sucker for EE castles and old soviet shit.

I have been told that Luxor is not safe right now and should be avoided. All the major tourist sights in Cairo will be fine (really just the pyramids at Giza and the Egyptian Museum). I suggest you visit some of the other pyramids and sights outside of the city, you should arrange a driver for that. In 2012 I went out drinking and never felt unsafe anywhere in Cairo. On this last trip it was a little unpleasant and a crowd began to form in the city of the dead, but otherwise nothing to worry about. The country just seems to be getting more mussie and more rundown. The future doesn't look bright.

Damn, a friend made a pretty good itinerary but it includes Luxor. Maybe I'd just roll the dice though. I suspect there could be a bit of sensationalism bias; like, I'm more likely to be SUICIDE BOMB'd in Egypt but I'm probably more likely overall to be killed in EE due to regular thugs.

AA, spent points on it because fuck AAdvanTTTTage. got a direct biz class straight to Dallas for like $600 total for 2 people

the boat should be 180, apparently it's a more Gen X/Boomer aged crowd but chill nevertheless. tuxedos mandatory for dinner

I'm going to torture my liver the whole time

Have they been opening up much availability? I think they rolled out a new F product, but maybe that was only 77W and not a refresh on the A380 suites. You have tons of point, might as well start searching avail now.

Nice, seems whenever I search the saver level only has "waitlist" availability. The SQ *A chart has some sweet spots for redemptions though. Did they put suites on the 777/350, or just refresh the 380?

You're def right -- I haven't done the same research as I did on my last trip, which was a pain in the ass. My schedule is relatively flexible so I can do the waitlist thing. I've heard it is fairly successful but usually last minute.
