Yeah, I guess not, I guess not. I thought they all sunk to the bottom but then I think I saw a movie or something w a floating shipwreck and wondered what the deal was. Somekind of buoyancy thing or what have you

you know i have to admit i am not sure whether this might be possible, i have to look up the extent to which those things might cause enough of a sharp pressure differential (much more pressure on the bottom than the top, enough to counteract gravity pulling down) to hold up a ship that's only partially submerged into a layer of water with different properties from the water above it.

I think its only like 5% maximum pressure differential which wouldn't be enough to stop a ship's fall--at least all according to Google.

upward forces in a body of water get stronger as you approach the surface, which finally manifests in surface tension. the deeper you are, the easier you sink.

i'm curious about the underlying mechanism behind this. the simplest model of buoyancy i can think of is one in which you have a stationary liquid where the water pressure increases as rho * g * d, where rho is the density of water, g is the acceleration due to gravity at Earth's surface, and d is the depth below the water's surface. water pushes on the object from all sides, but because the pressure is higher the further down you go, there's an overall upward force (in this model the overall upward force doesn't vary with depth, but this may not be true in more sophisticated models where you have moving water with different velocities at different heights, density varying with depth, etc). whether this is enough to overcome the gravitational force depends on the geometry and material properties of the object.

There's something that just seems right about certain objects sinking to a certain depth and then holding there. Ships? Eh, I guess not.

If it was a ship made all out of Styrofoam? thick hulls made out of kickboards? lol.

here was the one story about the blue whale that carried a coast guard (sunk as an articulate reef) cutter on its back for like 80km. does that count?

relatedly, though, do dead sharks float to the bottom, or do they just decay before they make it to the bottom?

Yes. If you're ever trapped on a sinking ship, just jump right before the ship stops sinking and you'll float to the top.
