Got fired, life falling apart

My wife was initially supportive, but became incredibly bitchy after a few days and started talking about divorce. I ended up getting a couple offers internally. With the first one I could work at my current office until my lease is up and then move to Denver. The second offer was in Orange County - a brutal 3-3.5 hour daily commute. I ended up taking the second offer because my wife refused to move to Denver. After I take the OC job, she decides that Denver would actually be better and asks if I can take that job. Which I obviously can't. Now I am enduring a hellish commute three-four days a week until our lease is up and we move. My wife wants to get an expensive rental near the beach, which I am not thrilled about. Goddamn when is my luck going to change? This shit is unbearable. CA is extremely tenant friendly and you can break leases with no penalty because landlords have a duty to mitigate damages. There are no apartments in the LA area that sit vacant for months. What you do is give notice to leave as of April 30 which is almost 2 months notice. Say you’re using your last lonth’s rent for April rent. If you’ve rented through a property manager that is professional, they will already know the drill and start process of reletting. If they don’t do anything, during that time, post an ad on Craigslist for the current rent amount and forward all prospective applicants to your landlord. Document everything. If your landlord is shady, they will say they don’t want to rent to a new person who may have worse credit history or whatever, but they have the duty to mitigate. Landlord will find a tenant easily for the same or likely higher rent because it’s almost a year later. All that’s at stake is your security deposit and sue them in small claims if landlord tries to withhold it. I broke my lease and did exactly this and won easily.
As for your wife, you’ve mentioned before you’re not even legally married because you never mailed in the signed marriage license. So I don’t know why you’re so against so called “divorce.” You’re the father of the child and will have rights. You should talk to the divorce lawyer again. |

I worked in a newly created position to help develop and roll-out the company’s 2018-2020 strategy. We launched the strategy in late January. I guess I probably should have asked in the interview what happens after the strategy has been launched. They said they didn’t have enough “strategy” work to justify a full time position now and wanted to pay for a bunch of stuff related to the strategy that wasn’t in the budget. So basically I helped develop the strategy and then they fire me to pay for some of the ideas I developed.
They have cut overhead to the bone, so they do shit like this all the time to free up cash in the corporate functional groups (FP&A, HR, IT etc.) and make their profit/revenue targets. Late last year they laid people off and cut all kinds of expenses so the company could meet their numbers and the executive team could get their bonuses. A good friend of mine at work showed me my boss’s bonus – well over $1 million. But because they made all these deep cuts they don’t have money available to pay for any new initiatives that come up the following year. They are scrambling for relatively small amounts of money in the functional groups all the time. Just a disgusting way to run a company. Really makes me hate GC.
