Going solo has been even a better decision than I thought.

1. Very easy to retain clients. Clients all have some shitbboomer bleeding them dry. If you are responsive and somewhat efficient, you are smoking their shitboomer lawyer and they’ll keep you forever. They’ll also refer you to all their friends.
2. Not easy, but not extremely difficult to get new business. After a couple clients, people start spreading your name. Most people are unhappy with their current services so not hard to sell on switching. Cross referrals with other professionals also are not that hard with a bit of networking.
3. People in America love risk takers and entrepreneurs. Everyone will really admire your bold decision to blaze your own path, as most people wish they did it in their field. Other fellow entrepreneur clients will feel closer to you and invested in helping you launch your own endeavor. People will feel like they aren’t just paying a big firm for services, but that they are helping build a business. |

This includes clients. Telling a client that you are not the right lawyer for them is one of the most awesome feelings. That’s the beauty of solo. It’s your life on your terms. The money doesn’t really matter so long as you can float your expenses after a year. |

Half or more of my job is being a generic corporate exec, and most of the "legal" work is managing a team. I'm probbaly better prepared to be generic VP at a company.
That said, I review /negotiate a few big contracts by myself a week and have for years now. I've drafted many a complex contract. Negotiated many complex 10+ millions dollar deals on my own, etc. |

I also try connect people from different deals who might have an interest in doing business together. The most important thing is I did a great job for clients, and some clients followed me to my new place (without me soliciting them).
Edit: last thing is to have the balls to ask for the business. So many people in biglaw end up knowing friends at companies who can give them work but just don’t act on it. Just ask. |
