this is the kind of retarded shit that sounds intuitive to someone that doesn’t watch basketball.
simple truth: players have improved exponentially over time. this will likely continue. 10 larry birds aren’t better than one kevin durant. 10 magic johnsons weren’t better than one lebron james. 50 bill russells weren’t better than one anthony davis. *GASP* 15 minutes on youtube will bear this out. by way of example, larry bird had the highest 3pt fg% in the league one year with a whopping 30%.
MJ is a special case and i’m actually not sure how he’d do. his game is objectively less valuable today than it was in the 90s. give me 2012-13 Lebron James or 2015-16 STEPHEN WARDELL CURRY over MJ NOW CRY AND BE OFFENDED. both are better suited for today's pace, space and ball movement. on the other hand, MJ would surely love not having to dealing with hand checking anymore.
this is tricky and isn’t easily reduced to “modern players soft so mj better”

"by way of example, larry bird had the highest 3pt fg% in the league one year with a whopping 30%"
Back then, many of his threes were off of broken plays. Coaches back then weren't setting up plays for shots beyond the arc. Also, it was a lot easier to contest a three back then when you had hand-checking and ref's looked the other way when there was contact on a shot (especially after the release of the ball).
I think Bird is actually one of the players who would fair well in the league today. His game would have to gravitate more to the outside but he'd be better than a prime Dirk Nowitzki. I agree that it's hard to tell with older players. Some of them have games that just wouldn't adjust well at all.

He would be the same or likely even much better.
For a perfect example that players have not gotten better (and definitely not exponentially so), look at Clint Capela. He's a pretty fucking effective center these days. Runs the floor well, blocks shots, grabs boards, hits the easy shots he takes at a high percentage. The Rockets are something like 38-2 when he plays with Harden and Paul and he has a 24.7 PER, which is actually #2 in the entire NBA among centers and #13 overall. In fact, that PER is right in the range of Hakeem Olajuwon's better years and not that far off from his best, and they were similar players in the general sense that both were long, athletic power forwards slotted in at center instead of their true position.
Now go compare some video of these two players. Olajuwon was exponentially better in literally every facet of the game. Absolutely elite defender. Could put the ball on the floor and go coast to coast. Poast moves light years beyond Capela. Mid range and shooting light years beyond. Passing and court vision light years beyond. And Dream was doing it against Shaq, Robinson, Mutombo, Mourning, Ewing, and a number of other centers who could step in and dominate today.
For further fucking review, look at the case study of Mutombo. The Rockets had their all-NBA center go down with an injury during a long winning streak. At like 50 fucking years old, Mutombo stepped in and dominated, was having 20 rebound games and swatting the shit out of everyone, and the Rockets kept winning and their D-rating with fossilized Mutombo went up by as much as their O-rating went down with the loss of Yao.
This is important because it is one of the few times we actually got to see a good (but not the best at his position) player from the Jordan era play in the modern era. Clearly new players had not had an overall skill increase that rendered players from an older era obsolete. In fact, the overall skill level has decreased over time because a clearly past his prime relic was able to go BUCK FUCKING WILD on the pussies in today's NBA. Also, do not estimate how many fucking fouls MJ would draw today. If his games had the same officiating as today he would have been shooting 30 free throws on average.
This is why I lmao when people say MJ would be anything approaching "above average" today. No. Steph Curry is generally regarded as one of the best todsy. Yet that faggot would not even be able to get his shot off against MJ unless it was a fast break, and would be constantly getting his shit stolen if he ever put the ball on the floor. MJ was one of the most intense, insane competitors of all time in any sport, and he would literally grind that little bitch into the ground with his D. Nor would Stephanie be able to guard MJ. Can you imagine him trying to stop an MJ drive or midrange shot? LOL just fucking LOL. Everyone itt underestimates how brutal it was to keep up with MJ on both end of the floor for an entire game and even contain him a little bit. . . the only players who got anything done at all were literally insane alpha thug gangbangers like Vernon Maxwell.

Not gonna argue about MJ - but players improving should sound very intuitive from a statistical sense over the long run (ignoring small year to year variation, team to team etc.).
The sample of potential NBA players increases significantly over time, as does nutrition science, training, sports science, analytics, etc. NBA players are now scouted from a global pool, and basketball participation / the number of people playing surely isn't decreasing.
Now maybe we have to define "skill" - because obviously the league was very different as were play styles. I think it's hard to make an argument that players are not more athletic, faster and stronger today. I don't think using anecdotal evidence of Capela's PER vs. the dream's PER is a meaningful argument (again I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you that players then weren't better - but I think we need something better than look at this guy vs. look at that guy on youtube) - because PER has been shown to be deeply flawed and there's only a slight but pathetically small correlation positive correlation between PER and win % differential as one example.

We’re assumig Jordan has access to modern training, nutrition , coaching and all that stuff right?
He’d be really good. LeBron vs Jordan debates would be even more heated than today. Young Jordan would be impossible to keep away from rim with handchecking not being allowed. Older Jordan would need to shoot the 3 a little better than Jordan actually did but it seems everyone works on this a lot more now so we can assume Jordan would do fine.

There *are* many classic teams and players that would fare less well in today’s NBA, some of them so poorly that you’d wonder where they would find room to adjust and adapt their games to our twinkball era. Bill Russell would in up against far more closely competitive talent, for example, and his leadership would be undermined by his struggles to get good stats, not to mention the whole three point line. The bad boy pistons and pat riley thug knicks teams would also be in foul and suspension trouble if they played the same way.
Michael Jordan, however, is guaranteed to 1) psychotically train to adapt to the three spree game, and 2) have the physical frame to be successful during every possible style of the game - he is literally the average height and weight of every single NBA player across all eras. I think he is a T5 player in not only today’s NBA, but all future versions of the nba.

He would insanely train to become an elite 3 point shooter.
He would murder everyone and shoot twice and many free throws as Harden.

Older millennials flame MJ and his "intangibles" so hard. They were too young to witness MJ, and too old to grow up with LeBron.
The comparison is equivalent to putting Steve Young in today's NFL. Or Shaq in 1980's bball. It's just fucking stupid to argue there have not been leaps and bounds in pro sports athelticiam and sophistication in the 2000's. Especially in the NBA/NFL.

Probably be T2 Kirk cousins level. I could see him geling with a good system and QB protection rules but the speed of defenses would seriously hamstring his play. Just like MJ. He'd still be good. Just not dominant.

Would you think that Alexander and Napoleon would make poor generals today because they've never seen an airplane?
Hell, would you think Alexander would be BTFO in Napoleon's era because he never saw a gun?
The real FAIR comparison is to ask Napoleon to command a phalanx, from horseback, without stirrups.
That kind of fallacy is what it sounds like when the youth of today, big dildos fully inserted into their asses, virtually insert a hologram of historical footage of past stars onto today's court. You don't think Jerry Krause gets a couple of above-league average 3-point shooters to surround Jordan in 2020? Or do you think Bill Cartwright is still being trotted out?

Do you think Larry Bird is still allowed to shovel his own driveway in 2020 to ruin his back?
Do you think Michael is even allowed to retire from the Bulls, twice, given the inherent GC economic pressures?
The fact is all-time greats maximized their own performance in their own eras, and there is no indication that they'd maximize any less given today's sports science and team institutional support.
The anti-Jordan guys need to show really dispositive proof of the game becoming HARDER today, not easier and softer. Something like Bill Russell's teams being given first-round byes in a league that drew upon a much smaller talent pool.
(If the Filipino league allowed defenders to hack at lane-drivers with machetes, that game would be clearly be harder than NBA basketball, despite the athletic talents of the players being lower.)
While players today are more athletic, those 90s defenses would've murdered KD, Curry, Harden, AD, etc.

He would do whatever it took to win, even if that meant taking new, better drugs.
So the answer is he is ALWAYS top dog. You can't mimic that mental obsession.
