Many players today have tremendous athleticism but don't really have the basics down. Countless guys in the NBA with no jumpshot, terrible defense, and low bball IQ...but in the NBA due to size and athleticism.

this is the kind of retarded shit that sounds intuitive to someone that doesn’t watch basketball.

simple truth: players have improved exponentially over time. this will likely continue. 10 larry birds aren’t better than one kevin durant. 10 magic johnsons weren’t better than one lebron james. 50 bill russells weren’t better than one anthony davis. *GASP* 15 minutes on youtube will bear this out. by way of example, larry bird had the highest 3pt fg% in the league one year with a whopping 30%.

MJ is a special case and i’m actually not sure how he’d do. his game is objectively less valuable today than it was in the 90s. give me 2012-13 Lebron James or 2015-16 STEPHEN WARDELL CURRY over MJ NOW CRY AND BE OFFENDED. both are better suited for today's pace, space and ball movement. on the other hand, MJ would surely love not having to dealing with hand checking anymore.

this is tricky and isn’t easily reduced to “modern players soft so mj better”

You are MFEing out of control in this subthread. Please review these clips and point out where Rodman aggressively chased rebounds at the expense of defense:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hpbHgEVdvX0

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=89IQcTPHkRs

https://m.youtube.com/watch?index=27&list=PLl0ny9_3DLnEdlxfDU9cMbUPTP51kYQOg&v=EglLZwE_fr

That’s arguably the best PG, C and PF of all time in their absolute primes, and Rodman as a second year, mid career and 10 year vet. Go get your motherfuckin shine box.

important questions: is the goal of basketball to maximize rebound%? can you think of any trade offs when a team decidss how much to focus on them (ie defensive positioning, giving up transition offense, offensive spacing etc).?

modern analytic world likes to look at contested rebounds. I think it's somewhere close to like 90% of rebounds are caught below 6 feet. A guy eating up a bunch of gimme rebounds to fill the stat sheet isn't the same as a guy taking away rebounds that would have otherwise gone to the other team.

Not saying Rodman wasn't a GOAT rebounder, just pointing out that total rebounds doesn't present the whole picture

the fact that people think kobe bryant and lebron james is a reasonable discussion speaks to the idiocy of sports fans. lebron james by like his 3rd season was a better basketball player than kobe at his absolute peak

"by way of example, larry bird had the highest 3pt fg% in the league one year with a whopping 30%"

Back then, many of his threes were off of broken plays. Coaches back then weren't setting up plays for shots beyond the arc. Also, it was a lot easier to contest a three back then when you had hand-checking and ref's looked the other way when there was contact on a shot (especially after the release of the ball).

I think Bird is actually one of the players who would fair well in the league today. His game would have to gravitate more to the outside but he'd be better than a prime Dirk Nowitzki. I agree that it's hard to tell with older players. Some of them have games that just wouldn't adjust well at all.

He'd be somewhere between Demarr DeRozan and Chris Paul. Solid player, seen as a Wiley vet, but ultimately not a centerpeice for a legit contender.

If he had another uninterrupted 15 seasons he would probably end up with 5-6 MVPs. Give him a supporting cast equal to Pippen, Grant, Rodman, etc. and a quality coach and you could expect as many if not more championships. Basically, he'd dominate just as much if not more. Youngins just don't realize how much of a freak athlete he was in the 80s so he would not skip a beat against today's defenders. NBA defense of the 80s/90s>>>>00s>>>>>today's. And once he got older and slower he would still average 30 on jump and foul shots. I have no doubt he would improve as a 3 point shooter if the trends of the game demanded it so he might even be averaging 35. He used to take a lot of inefficient (by modern standards) 20 ft jump shots. You truly missed out if you didn't get to enjoy MJ in his prime.

Didn't say they were inefficient, said they would be by modern standards. I mean he only converted about 40% of them, and the modern game would dictate that he pass more of them off to Armstrong, Kerr and Paxson on the wings, or to Grant in the paint or a slashing Pippen, so his assist number may rise. I agree they were deadly as fuck, especially in the clutch situations which is why neckbeards who talk about his FG% just don't get sports and shouldn't debate them. Also he would be taking more 3 pt shots with a jab step and pull up at the expense of the dribble backdown fadeaway 2s.

Did Jordan succeed in another environment besides Bulls with Phil Jackson, Pippen / rodman etc?

Serious question because the reason I ask - if I remember correctly - when Jordan first left in 93-94 season, the Bulls only won two fewer games with the same or very similar roster but no Jordan. I'm not saying this means Jordan got carried by his team - but this is probably as close to an experiment as you'll get in sports environment and it seems as if the Bulls did practically just as well the year Jordan left. Just that maybe his coach and team was much more crucial part of his success than people think?

Its the same as the Brady vs. Manning debate. Manning was worth more to he Colts who basically created its offense to suit Manning, whereas Brady plays within the Patriot system. So if you take Manning out, the Colts lose 14 games because the system isn’t suited for another QB. But most people would say Brady > Manning.

He would be the same or likely even much better.

For a perfect example that players have not gotten better (and definitely not exponentially so), look at Clint Capela. He's a pretty fucking effective center these days. Runs the floor well, blocks shots, grabs boards, hits the easy shots he takes at a high percentage. The Rockets are something like 38-2 when he plays with Harden and Paul and he has a 24.7 PER, which is actually #2 in the entire NBA among centers and #13 overall. In fact, that PER is right in the range of Hakeem Olajuwon's better years and not that far off from his best, and they were similar players in the general sense that both were long, athletic power forwards slotted in at center instead of their true position.

Now go compare some video of these two players. Olajuwon was exponentially better in literally every facet of the game. Absolutely elite defender. Could put the ball on the floor and go coast to coast. Poast moves light years beyond Capela. Mid range and shooting light years beyond. Passing and court vision light years beyond. And Dream was doing it against Shaq, Robinson, Mutombo, Mourning, Ewing, and a number of other centers who could step in and dominate today.

For further fucking review, look at the case study of Mutombo. The Rockets had their all-NBA center go down with an injury during a long winning streak. At like 50 fucking years old, Mutombo stepped in and dominated, was having 20 rebound games and swatting the shit out of everyone, and the Rockets kept winning and their D-rating with fossilized Mutombo went up by as much as their O-rating went down with the loss of Yao.

This is important because it is one of the few times we actually got to see a good (but not the best at his position) player from the Jordan era play in the modern era. Clearly new players had not had an overall skill increase that rendered players from an older era obsolete. In fact, the overall skill level has decreased over time because a clearly past his prime relic was able to go BUCK FUCKING WILD on the pussies in today's NBA. Also, do not estimate how many fucking fouls MJ would draw today. If his games had the same officiating as today he would have been shooting 30 free throws on average.

This is why I lmao when people say MJ would be anything approaching "above average" today. No. Steph Curry is generally regarded as one of the best todsy. Yet that faggot would not even be able to get his shot off against MJ unless it was a fast break, and would be constantly getting his shit stolen if he ever put the ball on the floor. MJ was one of the most intense, insane competitors of all time in any sport, and he would literally grind that little bitch into the ground with his D. Nor would Stephanie be able to guard MJ. Can you imagine him trying to stop an MJ drive or midrange shot? LOL just fucking LOL. Everyone itt underestimates how brutal it was to keep up with MJ on both end of the floor for an entire game and even contain him a little bit. . . the only players who got anything done at all were literally insane alpha thug gangbangers like Vernon Maxwell.

Not gonna argue about MJ - but players improving should sound very intuitive from a statistical sense over the long run (ignoring small year to year variation, team to team etc.).

The sample of potential NBA players increases significantly over time, as does nutrition science, training, sports science, analytics, etc. NBA players are now scouted from a global pool, and basketball participation / the number of people playing surely isn't decreasing.

Now maybe we have to define "skill" - because obviously the league was very different as were play styles. I think it's hard to make an argument that players are not more athletic, faster and stronger today. I don't think using anecdotal evidence of Capela's PER vs. the dream's PER is a meaningful argument (again I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you that players then weren't better - but I think we need something better than look at this guy vs. look at that guy on youtube) - because PER has been shown to be deeply flawed and there's only a slight but pathetically small correlation positive correlation between PER and win % differential as one example.

Cr but Re: your last paragraph, it would really depend on which era’s rules they’re playing in. Using 80s/90s rules (ie hand check, etc), you are absolutely cr. But using today’s rules, MJ would have a more difficult time, though still limit Curry’s effectiveness to some degree

He was taller, far more skilled and more athletic than Westbrook (though not quite as fast). The Jordan rules meant either doubling him as soon as he got the ball or funneling him to a big to give him a smack. He would score a lot and have a lot of assists.

He didn't have a "mid range game" until he had played for 10+ years, and even then he was still a huge problem for all 5 guys on whatever defense he faced until at least 98. 85-94 Jordan was the best finisher at the rim ever.

We’re assumig Jordan has access to modern training, nutrition , coaching and all that stuff right?

He’d be really good. LeBron vs Jordan debates would be even more heated than today. Young Jordan would be impossible to keep away from rim with handchecking not being allowed. Older Jordan would need to shoot the 3 a little better than Jordan actually did but it seems everyone works on this a lot more now so we can assume Jordan would do fine.

The single dumbest aspect of this thread is how little it accounts for 1) pick and roll, and 2) drive and dish as tools in Jordan's toolbox in 2018 NBA post rule changes. As a defense you would be choosing between a badly contested layup that would result in an and-one two thirds of the time and a wide open 3 or open alley oop at the basket depending on how you would rotate. Jordan's elite skill wasn't mid-range shooting. It was beating guys off the dribble and finishing at the rim. He was literally the best ever at that and it's not close and it's the single best skill a person can have to put pressure on a defense in 5-5 half court basketball. It's the best argument for him over Lebron bc Lebron has never had real game off the bounce and has always done most of his damage just bullrushing to the rim. Kobe was nowhere close to Jordan off the dribble, which is why he had to be the best "hard shot maker" ever, which is why advanced analytics hate Kobe (i.e. because his on-ball game didn't make anyone else better) and love Jordan (because his on-ball game helped the rest of his team more than anyone else's ever). Leaving this thread now to go find the defib paddles in our office.

There *are* many classic teams and players that would fare less well in today’s NBA, some of them so poorly that you’d wonder where they would find room to adjust and adapt their games to our twinkball era. Bill Russell would in up against far more closely competitive talent, for example, and his leadership would be undermined by his struggles to get good stats, not to mention the whole three point line. The bad boy pistons and pat riley thug knicks teams would also be in foul and suspension trouble if they played the same way.

Michael Jordan, however, is guaranteed to 1) psychotically train to adapt to the three spree game, and 2) have the physical frame to be successful during every possible style of the game - he is literally the average height and weight of every single NBA player across all eras. I think he is a T5 player in not only today’s NBA, but all future versions of the nba.

He would murder everyone and shoot twice and many free throws as Harden.

CR. Harden is a much better comparison than derozan. Better outside shot, albeit after years and years of practicing that skill that Jordan didn’t have and really only a B+/mid-30s % shooter. But imagine Harden with the ability to dunk over 7 footers on the reg, more quickness changing direction, plus the best array of head and ball fakes in modern basketball, and always looking to draw contact (like Harden), and you’ve got some idea of Jordan in his prime.

Older millennials flame MJ and his "intangibles" so hard. They were too young to witness MJ, and too old to grow up with LeBron.

The comparison is equivalent to putting Steve Young in today's NFL. Or Shaq in 1980's bball. It's just fucking stupid to argue there have not been leaps and bounds in pro sports athelticiam and sophistication in the 2000's. Especially in the NBA/NFL.

Probably be T2 Kirk cousins level. I could see him geling with a good system and QB protection rules but the speed of defenses would seriously hamstring his play. Just like MJ. He'd still be good. Just not dominant.

Mark Schlereth did 26 reps of 225 LAST WEEK.

http://1043thefan.com/166873/mark-schlereth-bench-press-challenge-pritchard-cecil/

Not that surprising considering his dad could bench 320 and his uncle ran a 56 second 400 when they were both in their 50s.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/1989/11/25/redskins-notebook/7f711ec0-32ac-45b8-8a7e-24b6821a29fa/?utm_term=.6a8f52a59c51

I guarantee Schlereth would be a probowler in today’s NFL as would 6’6” 260 lb Charles Mann and 6’4” 270 lb Dexter Manley, despite his illiteracy.

Would you think that Alexander and Napoleon would make poor generals today because they've never seen an airplane?

Hell, would you think Alexander would be BTFO in Napoleon's era because he never saw a gun?

The real FAIR comparison is to ask Napoleon to command a phalanx, from horseback, without stirrups.

That kind of fallacy is what it sounds like when the youth of today, big dildos fully inserted into their asses, virtually insert a hologram of historical footage of past stars onto today's court. You don't think Jerry Krause gets a couple of above-league average 3-point shooters to surround Jordan in 2020? Or do you think Bill Cartwright is still being trotted out?

Do you think Larry Bird is still allowed to shovel his own driveway in 2020 to ruin his back?

Do you think Michael is even allowed to retire from the Bulls, twice, given the inherent GC economic pressures?

The fact is all-time greats maximized their own performance in their own eras, and there is no indication that they'd maximize any less given today's sports science and team institutional support.

The anti-Jordan guys need to show really dispositive proof of the game becoming HARDER today, not easier and softer. Something like Bill Russell's teams being given first-round byes in a league that drew upon a much smaller talent pool.

(If the Filipino league allowed defenders to hack at lane-drivers with machetes, that game would be clearly be harder than NBA basketball, despite the athletic talents of the players being lower.)

While players today are more athletic, those 90s defenses would've murdered KD, Curry, Harden, AD, etc.
