That's generally true when it comes to muscleback blades, but a lot of these dudes (like Spieth) play things like AP2's now, which split the difference between blades and game improvement irons.

But yes, there's really no discernible difference between Titleist MB 695s and 718s.

really not a whole lot of difference between cavity backs from 15 or so years ago either, though lofts have become stronger. in the early/mid-90s though you were basically either a pingmo or played blades though now there are more players on tour now who grew up playing cavity backs.

Titleist makes their irons about 2 degrees stronger and 0.25 inches longer now. Basically a 7 iron now would be a 6.5 iron 20 years ago. Callaway is even worse with this; their PW is like an 8-iron in many older sets.

His irons are basically the same. Newer woods produce lower spin numbers for more distance. New balls go considerably further as well.

Definitely a much bigger difference in driver/shaft and ball technology

For reference, tiger averaged 297 yards per drive in 1998 (#2 on tour) and averages 304 yards per drive this year (#37). #2 on tour this year is 318 yards per drive. Gotta figure driver/ball technology are worth around 15-20 yards.

distance basically spiked up after the Pro-V1 was launched (late 2000) and plateaued around the time 460cc drivers became the norm (2004-2005ish)

Tiger's recent distance increases are a result of a lighter and longer shaft combination. He's now playing 44 1/2" (up from 43 1/2) and a 60 or 65gram shaft (used to play 75g). Those changes definitely make a difference.

I gained like 20+ yards when I started playing a Cleveland Classic 290 at 46" with a 43 gram ultralight shaft. Went from 270-275 on good strikes to multiple 300+ yard drives/round. I'm back to 45" and a heavier shaft on my new driver and I'm shorter (but straighter) again.

Tiger used a fucking steel driver shaft until like 2005 or so and still was consistently #2 in driving behind Daly. That and the old school PT 3-woods were all trendy when I was playing jr golf

My first "adult" driver was a some cheap, steel shafted persimmon thing that I used through eighth grade. I loved that club. Had a great feel and it hit it a ton until the face cracked. Hadn't found a driver that I really loved again until that Cleveland 290, probably because of it's old school looks and super soft/mushy feel. Feels a lot like persimmon/balata contact.

Yes. Go to a good independent golf shop, they should have a ton. Won't be free but you can get a solid discount on a decent set.

Depends on the price point. If you wanna spend 250 bucks I'd go used, get something that was top of the line a decade ago instead of something new from Sam's club. If you're gonna spend 700 you can probably get a very good new set that would arguably be better than something that cost 950 two years ago... But that's a closer call. The lower your budget the more I would recommend used.

Yep. For $250 you can get a set of clubs that retailed for $1200 in 2010. IMO, unless you're a competitive player who wants/needs truly custom fit clubs, you should almost always buy used (outside of some outlandish liquidation sale). And if you buy used forged irons, you can always get them retrofitted for like $50 tops.

Go to an Edwin Watts (Golfmart) or PGA superstore and you can find pretty good deals on used irons. I just picked up a mint set of MP-63s (3-pw, DG X-100s) with fresh grips at Golfmart for a little over $200. They lie board tested them for me and threw in lie and loft adjustments for free.

Those places also have plenty of game improvement type sets in the $70-$200 range.

callaway has a used storefront on amazon, "certified used." can get a set of game improvement irons for like 250ish, a driver for 75, and a wood for similar. For seriously just starting you can also just get whatever set comes with a bag and costs less than 200
