It doesn’t cover routine shit like shots, only injuries and illnesses (but not the initial tests/diagnosis). Ours is more expensive than most, but it should be like 50/mo.

Also thought of another - I'm not a believer in insurance, but the vet will often have discounted packages for all the shots, blood work, certain number of visits for a flat annual price. Puppies get sick a ton and as first time puppymos you will freak out and bring it to the vet a lot. Probably worth it at least for year one. |

If you want to give wet food occasionally, it’s cheaper to just cook it yourself and freeze.
I can’t opine in whether pet insurance is worth it or not, as it is always a gamble whether or not you will end up needing it. You could pay $600-700/year and never use it. Also there are often congenital conditions that won’t be covered by insurance but you sometimes don’t know until you submit it and get denied.
I can say in my case, I’ve spent over $12k over 5 years, so I should’ve gotten insurance. He had a slipped disc that required a $7k surgery.

I mix half kibble and half wet food because he is picky. 1 cup twice a day.
Insurance now that he’s older and had surgeries is like over $1200/year. Again, it’s a gamble if it’s worth it or not.

for premium purposes, how do they know the dog's age? both of our dogs are rescues. there's no way to know. cant you just underestimate by a couple years? |

Our dog is allergic to legumes, peas, and brown rice, which makes it a real bitch to find him dog food. We ended up going with this, and it has been 180:

Much cheaper than most of the other high end dog food (about half-price), and it has high quality ingredients. Also, Victor makes all of their food in-house, which is rare, and has a good track record for avoiding contamination.
Also, use a measuring cup to serve the dog food and error towards the low end for serving sizes. Keep your dog skinny, and you will avoid many health issues. |

Yes, meat is best, but dogs are just fine eating dry food mixed up with some water. How do I know this? Because MILLIONS OF FUCKING DOGS have done this EVERY YEAR for DECADES.
It is telling how many of you (DBG, TMF, MND, Earl, etc.) are wasting your prime breeding years caring for an animal rather than a child. This is reminiscent of the Japanese obsession with pets immediately prior to them entering negative population growth. (Pets now well outnumber children there.) Some sort of transference shit going on for sure.
Don't get me wrong, I love dogs and had lots of pets growing up, but JFC people get a grip - dogs are animals intended to serve man. They should be respected and treated well but they don't need to be on your retarded fad diets. |

He has a relatively short life; why not give him some extra joy in it and I spend 30 min a week cooking up a big batch that lasts a few weeks. It’s not a matter of treating our dog like a child or spoiling him. Dogs are simple creatures and get joy out of eating and exercising and spending time with you. Why would I deny him one of the few things he enjoys by just giving him the same dry kibble he hates everyday when a small effort on my part can make it more tasty for him and it’s also healthy for him. I’d say it’s the least I can do for him.
I sure as hell do 100x more for an actual human child cooking and planning meals instead of just adding a bunch of boiled chicken and salmon and peas. |
