Ours is monthly with a $500 deductible and 90% coverage thereafter. It doesn’t cover routine shit like shots, only injuries and illnesses (but not the initial tests/diagnosis). Ours is more expensive than most, but it should be like 50/mo.

Get it immediately as there’s a waiting period for certain conditions (like hip dysplasia).

Not flame.

Also thought of another - I'm not a believer in insurance, but the vet will often have discounted packages for all the shots, blood work, certain number of visits for a flat annual price. Puppies get sick a ton and as first time puppymos you will freak out and bring it to the vet a lot. Probably worth it at least for year one.

Chewy.com for dry food. They consistently have the best prices.

If you want to give wet food occasionally, it’s cheaper to just cook it yourself and freeze.

I can’t opine in whether pet insurance is worth it or not, as it is always a gamble whether or not you will end up needing it. You could pay $600-700/year and never use it. Also there are often congenital conditions that won’t be covered by insurance but you sometimes don’t know until you submit it and get denied.

I can say in my case, I’ve spent over $12k over 5 years, so I should’ve gotten insurance. He had a slipped disc that required a $7k surgery.

what's your wet food recipe? the rescue shrew gave us a recipe with ground turkey, but the problem is that kosher ground turkey is like $8/lb and this puppydood doesn't need to kosher meat.

how much wet and dry food do you give him a day and how many times a day?

why don't you get insurance now that he's getting older?

I don’t have a recipe, you can literally take any protein (chicken, turkey, salmon etc) and put some veggies (carrots, peas, squash etc) into it and brown rice and potatoes and make it into a stew. I mix half kibble and half wet food because he is picky. 1 cup twice a day.

Insurance now that he’s older and had surgeries is like over $1200/year. Again, it’s a gamble if it’s worth it or not.

nutella's puppydood and earl comparing STEW recipes.

srsly, sounds like a puppydood cholent!! any kosher poultry is expensive, as is salmon. would canned tuna be an acceptable protein? trying to think what else is cheap that is kosher.

yeah, rescue shrew said do half wet and half dry. she said 1/3 wet and 1/3 dry TOTAL for the day. he's 10-11 lbs now but he's underweight. maybe he needs much more. how big is your puppydood now?

for premium purposes, how do they know the dog's age? both of our dogs are rescues. there's no way to know. cant you just underestimate by a couple years?

Why do you need to buy kosher dog food? Can't you buy non-kosher dog food if it's not for your consumption?

you're correct, but it needs to be kosher if we're making a STEW in our kitchen. dog can eat non-kosher food, but i'll treyf up (unkosher) my kitchen if i'm using non-kosher meat to make his STEW.

He’s 22 lbs so double the size of your dog. 1 cup of food a day is prob enough for your dog depending on activity level.

I don’t know about lying about age but the insurance needs a report from the vet and my vet didn’t lie about his age, just had the estimate.

Definitely not you guys, it was city dog. He was limping/not jumping for a bit and vet prescribed him pain meds and muscle relaxants. maybe a month after, he couldn’t walk at all one day and was paralyzed. We rushed him to the animal hospital and he had emergency surgery that day to avoid permanent paralysis. He’s better now although suffered a recent setback and is back on limited activity. Poor guy.

I feel terrible. I asked you to leave him at city dog for two days before we watched him because we couldn’t do earlier in the week.

You can make your own treats or buy any reputable brand not made in China.

Dogs don’t really need treats. You can buy raw hides or other natural chews and they last a long time with a small dog and it cleans their teeth.

Looks like $3.89 per lb for a whole chicken. You would just roast the whole bird and portion it out to be fed to the dog. With a little shit dog like yours a whole chicken would probably feed it for a month.

I wouldn’t feed my dog tuna out of a can. I don’t eat that myself. Also do they even have unsalted tuna since I do not give him salt.

Also you need to get flea/tick/heartworm meds which are expensive (I didn’t give him his meds for 2 months cuz he was sick and then he got fucking fleas). It costs like $100 for 6 months supply, but you can find coupons online sometimes.

As others mentioned, you don't want to skimp on dog food, but a lot of the expensive dog food out there is FLAME.

Our dog is allergic to legumes, peas, and brown rice, which makes it a real bitch to find him dog food. We ended up going with this, and it has been 180:

https://www.chewy.com/victor-select-nutra-pro-active-dog/dp/129281

Much cheaper than most of the other high end dog food (about half-price), and it has high quality ingredients. Also, Victor makes all of their food in-house, which is rare, and has a good track record for avoiding contamination.

Also, use a measuring cup to serve the dog food and error towards the low end for serving sizes. Keep your dog skinny, and you will avoid many health issues.

Jesus christ dog owners are mentally ill these days. (Sorry to trigger you, "pet parents"!)

LJFL at feeding your "fur babies" organic, gluten free dog food, complaining about their food "allergies," and paying for them to get chemo.

Yes, meat is best, but dogs are just fine eating dry food mixed up with some water. How do I know this? Because MILLIONS OF FUCKING DOGS have done this EVERY YEAR for DECADES.

It is telling how many of you (DBG, TMF, MND, Earl, etc.) are wasting your prime breeding years caring for an animal rather than a child. This is reminiscent of the Japanese obsession with pets immediately prior to them entering negative population growth. (Pets now well outnumber children there.) Some sort of transference shit going on for sure.

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs and had lots of pets growing up, but JFC people get a grip - dogs are animals intended to serve man. They should be respected and treated well but they don't need to be on your retarded fad diets.

I've owned 5 dogs in my life and none has ever had a food allergy. One had seasonal allergies that resulted in dermatitis. It was easily cured with a shot administered at home.

I've seen dogs with food allergies. Most often this can be easily treated by switching to a different brand of dog food.

the ability of your dog to kill things is not a positive 99% of the time.

I would never want a dog that couldn't kill most things.

Dog food allergies are real. My dog used scratch his ears and lick his paws until they bled. You don’t want to see them so uncomfortable and need to figure out what’s causing it.

Yes, so you switch brands of dog food. There are other answers besides cooking your dog dinner like it is your child.

i don't cook food for the dog. But if you are going to add boiled chicken who gives a shit.

I do wipe his ass, but that's for our benefit, not his.

Is that to prevent him from scooting across your floor? I have never heard of wiping a dogs ass before and can't tall if you're kidding. You should see if he just needs his anal glands purged. My lab needed that when he was retrieving and swimming so much it looked like his tail was broken.

no, that's to keep him from rubbing his shit covered asshole on my couch and on the pillows on my bed.

His asshole is clean after shitting probably 85% of the time. But 10-15% he has some shit back there that needs wiping.

you would not sit on your couch naked after taking a shit without wiping your ass.

I also wipe his feet after he goes out.

Feet is normal if it's damp/wet out.

What kind of breed gets shit on its ass? I have never heard of wiping a dogs ass, honestly. JFC. My labs took clean, no-wipe dumps exclusively. Is this an Asian thing like being crazy about wearing shoes in the house/turning off fans at night?

it is an asian thing.

But try wiping your dogs ass for a week, I guaranty some of the shits will leave shit residue on the asshole or on the fur. You don't see it on his asshole but its there.

If fact, I dog sat a lab for 2 days and wiped his ass and he did have a shitty ass for one out of the six walk/poop sessions as I recall.

Ive switched brands like 2-3 times and found a limited ingredients kibble and it’s fine but he doesn’t like the kibble so I cook some food I know he’s not allergic to make it tastier.

He has a relatively short life; why not give him some extra joy in it and I spend 30 min a week cooking up a big batch that lasts a few weeks. It’s not a matter of treating our dog like a child or spoiling him. Dogs are simple creatures and get joy out of eating and exercising and spending time with you. Why would I deny him one of the few things he enjoys by just giving him the same dry kibble he hates everyday when a small effort on my part can make it more tasty for him and it’s also healthy for him. I’d say it’s the least I can do for him.

I sure as hell do 100x more for an actual human child cooking and planning meals instead of just adding a bunch of boiled chicken and salmon and peas.

i'm not sure dogs have the same sense of loves and hates when it comes to food. They are garbage disposals and would be fat unhealthy fucks like people if we didn't crack the whip on them.

TCR. Your dog would like non-chocolate ice cream too, why not just feed it that and save time in the kitchen?

Lol your dog is very food motivated. As you’ve seen firsthand, my dog isn’t a fan of his food.

I did above, it’s def not your fault. I think he was just stressed at city dog which aggravated an old injury. Honestly it wasn’t foreseeable.

I think he would’ve injured sooner or later either way. Some dogs are prone to disc injuries, just like humans. No need to feel bad whatsoever.

i love puppydoods, but they are simple creatures and do they really care what food they eat as long as it's healthy for them?

no, their inability to select what food they eat (everything) is the only reason we can keep them healthy, unlike ourselves.

DBG you have the worst traits about being a Jew and the one single trait you managed to copy from goys is unfortunately the worst thing about them - dog worship. So you are the worst of the worst. Yeah yeah duck sause. Whatevs. Enjoy your smelly mutt. Hopefully you will train it well but given everything else I've read about you I am not optimistic.
