Look, I’d love to throw a ball with my little boy too. But girls are a calming presence in the early years while the boy would otherwise cause ruckus, and in turn he will look out and protect her once she’s high school age to minimize your headache.

I wanted 2 boys because i think same sex have higher chance of being close, but 2nd is a girl. Also the mother has more responsibility when puberty hits and self esteem issues come up. I don’t really want to deal with that. I was actually a bit disappointed but got over it in like a day. I’m hoping for a sweeter, less demonic toddler.

I bought my son Daniel tiger’s baby sister stuffed animal and said “this is your baby sister, please take care of her.” He slammed her against the wall and then ran all his toy trucks over her. When I asked him why he did that, he said “she’s crying.” Auspicious start.

Really, I think you're getting the better deal. I think it would be fun to get a chance to raise one of each.

I do wonder about the experience of having a sibling suddenly show up. I was an only child so I don't really have any experience with this sort of this, but I can't imagine it's pleasant to have someone show up and take up a healthy chunk of your parents' time and attention.

Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

I am an only child too so I have no experience either. My husband is 1 of 3 and said that he’s now realized that every kid after the first basically is an afterthought and gets screwed attention wise. The first at least had a period where they were the only and parents were super attentive due to caring too much. I’m much more worried about how my sons going to adjust than caring for the lump of a newborn that I can just stuff in the rock n play.

Your husband has a point---I remember with our first I paid a lot of attention during the ultrasounds and was charting crown-rump length measurements and things like that.

This time around I'm much less into the details of the process. I imagine that'll carry over once he's born.

Same siblings close together can become competitive. You have an older brother no matter what which his great. A girl means he can hit on her friends when they're older lol. Also less pressure for a third if you're hoping to stop at 2.

It's going to be close to a 4 year age gap by the time the new one's here. I'm not sure what that means in terms of getting along, competition, things like that.

You're right, though---hitting on a little sister's friends is 180.

It's going to be really tough for her to give up on the idea of a girl once she's packing the last of the baby stuff away. The pressure will be strong. But enjoy #2! It is 180^180 watching the sibling interactions.

I'm relieved about not having to buy new toys---we have friends who have daughters and I just don't "get" the toys they play with. Whereas most everything my son plays with seems like fun and I can relate to.

Edit: Now I just have to hope he doesn't inherit his mom's 5'1 height.

Well we are not getting any girl toys or dollhouse things so she will have to make due with the construction vehicles we have.

It’s funny that you talk about “getting” the toys because I find it incredibly boring to build duplo and lining up trains and crashing cars and my husband really enjoys it. I mean I enjoy playing with my son, but I don’t enjoy the toys themselves the way my husband does. There’s this tonka garbage truck in particular that my husband said “wow he’s so lucky he has this toy, I would’ve gone nuts over this as a kid” and I’m thinking “really? It’s a stupid garbage truck.”

I could never tell how much of the "girl toy" thing is parents picking the stuff out and sending the kid on a certain path and how much is baked in the cake.

We know one couple that is very insistent on making their daughter play with gender-neutral or boy toys and whenever I see her with other kids she's losing her shit over shopkins or some princess outfit.

I really just feel like I'm biding my time until I can play sports with my son. That's what I'm really looking forward to. But until then it is pretty fun to play with marble runs and build train tracks. Stuff my wife enjoys, but I suspect not as much as my son and I do.

Yeah I’m not against gender specific toys, I just don’t want to spend unnecessary money into getting a whole new set of toys since our house is already a disaster zone of bright plastic. We didn’t push anything on our son and he just naturally gravitated toward all the stereotypically boy stuff. If the girl goes nuts over the tea parties, I’ll have to accommodate but I’m really curious how much of it is nurture v nature.

If you're only having two, I say boy/boy. Boys need a brother. I only have an older sister.

Girls I know with sisters only seem to bitch about them, even if they're "close"

EDIT: Just saw you're having a boy. Congrats, think that's the best outcome you could get
