most companies that sell services or expertise have projects. a project manager just manages and tracks the work of his underlings. its not hard, but they will generally have to take the fall if shit hits the fan.

PMs will generally work under a lawyer within legal on any kind of IT project and in-house legal is all about building out portals and shit to automate tasks so we can fire analyst and associate level drones and paralegals where possible. Most of my job now is this kind of buildout work. PMs will do things like map out UX flows (user experience maps) that will then go to the code monkeys. They also map procedures. A lawyer will identify needed controls but implementation methodology is left to a project manager. Senior PMs can and will boss lawyers around because they are in charge of all sorts of metrics reporting related to controls and the business runs on metrics. Attorney grunts who do the day to day work will have little interaction with PMs but attorneys who manage groups will deal with them daily, hourly, and at 5am on calls with Singapore.
