External salary tracking websites are generally not very accurate. At Google, there is an internal salary spreadsheet that is populated by employees. You may have read about it in the news.
Generally, annual total compensation for engineers at each of the levels is around the following (n.b. the higher level you go, the less data there is on the spreadsheet):
Software Engineer II: $175k
Software Engineer III: $250k
Senior Software Engineer: $350k
Staff Software Engineer: $475k
Senior Staff Software Engineer: $600k
Principal Engineer: $750k
For engineers working outside the US, you can expect the pay to be 30–50% less.
