Savannah Law School will be closing at the end of this semester, according to a student who was in a meeting held at the school on Wednesday.

Third-year student Erica Drew said Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School Dean Malcolm Morris and Treasurer for the school’s Board of Directors Michael Markovitz announced at town hall meeting on Wednesday that the Savannah Law School building on Drayton Street had been sold.

Drew said she was encouraged to attend the meeting, where Morris and Markovitz told faculty and students that Savannah Law School would not be enrolling new students after spring semester.

Current students were told that they would be relocated until graduation, per requirement by the American Bar Association. Students were not told where they would be relocated, Drew said.

Drew is graduating in May. The school will remain open until that point, though the graduation ceremony is held at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum.

“For a small law school, we are so closely knit. Stellar faculty, stellar students,” Drew said. “It’s just so heartbreaking.”

Calls to Morris, Markovitz, and Savannah Law School Dean Marc Roark were not immediately returned.

Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School purchased the 199-year-old Candler Hospital to use for its Savannah Law School campus in 2012, according to the school’s website.

A restoration of the building’s facade was completed in 2014, which re-opened East Huntingdon Street between Drayton and Abercorn streets.
