One of the more powerful religious moments of my life occurred from reading a library book.

College was a pretty grim time for me for a variety of reasons. One book that helped me through the period was Lord of the World by Robert Hugh Benson. It's a Christian apocalypse novel but really the core of it is the challenge of sustaining Christian belief in a world where almost everybody is hostile or indifferent and despair is an overwhelming temptation. I finished the book while riding on a train in Italy (Ancona to Florence to be exact) at the end of a study abroad. The book's climax occurs on the feast of Pentecost and by happenstance that day was Pentecost. A fluke coincidence, of course, but it was interesting and made me dwell on the book more, to my benefit.
