Their debts are bad and getting worse. Public and private debt as a percentage of GDP exceeded 280% in 2014, already higher than that of the US. The rate of increase in that ratio exceeds that of the US as well. The only way such a situation can be resolved is with a political, rather than economic, solution. The last thing you want to do with an indebted sovereign is to trigger a crisis that gives them the ability to remake the social system.
The enthronement of Xi will ossify the political establishment and make it incompetent.
China will get old before it gets rich. They will be crushed by the costs of supporting their elderly in 20 years, not conquering the world. |
