In NYC this summer -- Taking HINTS and SUGGESTIONS regarding RENT

They wanna live around lower east side -- two of us are downtown, one in midtown where most law firms are.
Is living in NYC worth it for the social life? I could live with relatives upstate and take 45 minute train into NYC. Then again, an apartment in the city would be nice. I'm not a Chad but am sociable, attractive and able to have conversations/flirt with girls so i know the apartment would come in handy to throw parties/invite people back to, but is it really worth it for 10 weeks? Even if I hook up with a couple girls it's not like I'd be able to make it work with a NYC shrew long term, so is 8k worth a couple parties and one night stands at best?
Big question to XO: Am i just being cheap? Is this one of those things I'll look back on and be like "i should have lived in NYC that summer"? I feel like it might be but 8K turns my stomach
