The problem is that optimists will always say that pleasure makes up for pain and pessimists will disagree. That's it, no getting around that. I like Zapffe, even though his 'On the Tragic' was never translated from Norwegian, the Last Messiah is the best philosophical essay I've read. And it is much more effective than Benatar, because he outlines all the ways that humans repress consciousness and how they bubble up into a powder keg of insanity.
