Basically we’re sick of the gooks taking all of our intellectual property and we’re not gonna TAKE IT anymore, but they will probably gook us out and we will lose this trade war.

So when libs (or whoever) oppose this are they opposing protecting American interests in general or do they exclusively cite that "we'll lose the trade war" as their opposition? Fucking libs, sick of this short sighted thoughtless corporatist dicksucking

LIBS who oppose tariffs are total fucking hypocrites; the left has HISTORICALLY supported economic protectionism and pro-worker policies. only sellout neoliberals don't.

"classical liberalism" advocates FOR free trade. modern leftism up until the clinton administration didn't. and even a lot of leftists assailed clinton for signing NAFTA.

when you say “our” IP, what exactly are you talking about? IP of US based multinationals, even if they do 20000000x more business in beijing than in ARE country? what happens if a us company does an inversion and incorporates in ireland? is it still “our” IP?

seems pretty quaint to look at this from a nationalism lens

Where a US based company uses the technology for production or sells the technology as a product is not relevant to whether or not that company owns it. China "respects" our ownership under international IP norms but forces licensing of US IP to the Chinese partner of mandatory US/Chinese joint ventures to operate in China. That's bullshit trade practice.

I don't know what this bullshit about Ireland is. The company owns the IP, not the United States.

this has nothing to do with IP. if anything it's about dumping, which would harm our domestic industries in a time of warfare, but even that rationale is a stretch.

It's about over production. But only on its face. Trump is screaming about steel overproduction (who gives a shit) but will ultimately try to fuck with US/China IP relations. Also I don't think there is any true dumping going on in steel.

When a US firm wants to enter the Chinese market the Chinese government requires a joint venture with a Chinese company. In these joint ventures US companies license or assign the relevant technologies to the Chinese on unfavorable terms. When the Chinese enter US markets, the average tariff is like 2.75%.

Trump in response is putting tariffs on Chinese steel, aluminum and other import categories totaling $60b (out of $500b total) worth of Chinese goods as a way of reducing the $375b trade deficit and correct the asymmetrical market entry requirements. China wants us instead to export high technology products that we refuse to allow over there to reduce the surplus.

China is saying they don't want a trade war but will fight one (counter tariffs) if we instigate one (which we are).

I think we need one, because the Chinese joint venture and intellectual property policies are screwing us majorly. That's the heart of all this, as far as I can see. And the Chinese president should recognize he needs to stabilize the Chinese market through liberalisation. Trade wars are easy to win.

Libs are afraid of confrontation and would rather feel bad for the developing Chinese market and let Xi steamroll us than take what's ours and possibly suffer minor short term decreases in welfare.

IDEALLY tariffs should bring manufacturing jobs back to the US. Do libs oppose this? Do they address this in any way? Like "we know the intended goals of tariffs are to benefit American workers but we feel these efforts will fail. Instead, to help American workers we propose..."?

Bruh the number of jobs a 25% tariff is gonna bring back to the US is small. This is all posturing to get China to liberalize their markets.

What will China liberizing their markets do

What would it take to bring jobs back? 90% tariffs? Total ban?

If China liberalized our companies would accrue a larger proportion of their China based profits rather than having to share them with the mandatory Chinese joint venture partner.

I dunno. At least 50%. Chinese steel is like 40% cheaper probably. https://agmetalminer.com/mmwp/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/HRC-US-vs-HRC-China_opt.png

elite libs and reptiles were lazy, just giving away wealth to trading partners because a small group of elite people in the US were getting wealthy.

trump wants to undo about 30 years of us being lazy.
