for a while we split an apartment with roommates (4BR/2BA). since our names were the only ones on the lease and we were liable for filling the rooms and stuff, our cut of the rent was like $400/month. then we snagged a rent-controlled 1-BR for $1000/mo for a year. We had a kid and moved to a ghetto rent controlled $1500/mo 3-BR. It's a dump and in a shitty school district and we need to move out, having another kid in June. unfortunately i don't like the trend of rapidly escalating housing costs that we're experiencing but i guess that goes with the territory of having kids.
also we don't own cars so that cuts down on costs. |

the area i live in has more expensive rents/house prices than most of the country because it's walkable and has good transit. for the rent i pay for my current rent-controlled apartment, i'd probably pay more to live in houston or whatever.
i knew where to find a walkable neighborhood that still had relatively cheaper rents compared to other walkable neighborhoods in this metro. and even then, i had to wait for a rent-controlled apt to open up. cities where most apartments are rent-regulated, like SF and NYC, actually tend to have lower turnover rates and vacancies than cities where that's not the case. the cheapest rent-regulated apartments are in less desirable neighborhoods and are unrenovated. it's doable for anyone, but it takes some effort, know-how, and ability to live in somewhat shitty apartments and fix shit yourself.

how much have i realistically saved in rent? not much. most of my savings are from general frugal living. again...only lived in rent controlled apts for past 2 years, lived with roommates before that. if i lived in the neighborhoods my friends live in i might have paid $1800 for rent for a market-rate 1BR. in my neighborhood, i would've paid $1400 for a market-rate nicely renovated 1BR. instead i paid $1000 for an unrenovated 1BR. i'm frugal as shit compared to most people. i haven't been to a restaurant that serves meals over $10 in like 5 years. we cook at home 90% of the time. bargain shop for groceries. haven't bought a drink at a bar in like 2 years. most people wouldn't want to live like that, i guess. but i don't give a shit. |
