I am re-learning German as an adult, though I don't think that's a particularly hard one and I already had a little bit of a base.

I will say the most difficult aspect for me is all the vocabulary and phrases -- it gets harder to remember all that shit when I'm not using it regularly.

Japanese is easy except for the kanji. Literally every sound they use is duplicated in the english language, there are only five vowels, and they have helpful particles to designate subject, object, etc. (e.g. ga, wo, ni, de). All words consistent of vowel/consonant pairings with the exception of words that end with the letter n, so it's pretty easy to parse when you hear people speaking.

I actually find Spanish to be harder to understand.

True, but I would argue that that's a unique comparison because Chinese grammar just happens to be quite similar to English grammar. Japanese grammar is not harder than, say, Indonesian.

that's it's only saving grace. FSI and DLI both treat Arabic, Korean, Japanese and Chinese as cat IV languages, the toughest, most time intensive category, but I've heard that if Korean had an ideographical alphabet like Arabic, Chinese and to some extent Japanese (with Kanji), it would be it's own cat V.

English and Mandarin Chinese have pretty similar origin stories. English is old English as spoken by Normans. Mandarin is old Chinese as spoken by Manchu/Mongols. it means they're both languages that are super easy to speak poorly, but hard to master.

Japanese is almost always in the top 5 hardest languages for English speakers to learn.

The Foreign Service Institute says Japanese is the hardest.

Respectfully disagree. If you have studied other languages before and know what works for you they aren't that hard. For example in always done really well with flashcards. I make my own and carry 5-10 in my back pocket on any given day. By the end of the day I will have those 5-10 cards memorized well enough that I won't need to to back to them basically ever. I learned the entire Korean alphabet on the 12 hour plane ride to Seoul using only flash cards, and could read anything phonetically by the time I was in the taxi to my hotel.

The most difficult thing about Chinese I think (other than reading/writing) is getting the tones right. I think the trick to that is to speak in a higher or lower register (i.e. your "singing voice") so that you can you can easily hit the full range. If you try to do it in your normal english speaking voice you will struggle with tones at the high or low extremes.

Japanese will fuck with you because what you learn in the classroom is very formal, and when you talk to actual Japanese dudes they use all kinds of slang while you talk like a fag. It's even worse if you're a guy learning Japanese from a woman because women speak differently and you'll literally end up talking like a girl (though japs are polite and won't tell you this to your face).

cr on Japanese, not CR on Chinese. tones in Chinese very optional. tones in China switch from region to region, so speaking with "correct" tones is like being a Chinese dude who speaks in impeccable Queen's English

Yeah I know tones vary. You still have to be able to hit them easily, whatever region you're in. This is true for every tonal language I've encountered, e.g. Vietnamese tones also vary widely by region but there are still low and high tones you need to be able to pronounce with ease.

i mean, you have to hit them easily in the sense that XO NOWAGs should have to hit the R and L sound. but it's not necessary for understanding. everyone knows what a bowlcut NOWAG who says "prease mistah, rinkedin...?" means.

speaking w/ no tones in China means you just sound like a white guy. protip: they already know you're white

Chinese and English are very similar languages. both mongrel languages that are very easy to speak poorly because of that. however, that means both languages very hard to master though.

Language instruction in Asia is terrible. It's all focused on rote memorization. American language instruction is as good as anywhere in the world. We also tend to have native speakers as instructors whereas Asians very rarely do (let alone competent ones).

Also, Americans are much more accustomed to parsing shitty accents. Most Asians have never heard a foreigner try to speak their language.

I'm not claiming to have any knowledge but I think an adult learner would not just struggle with tones but actually not be able to identify them. And by this stage of your life your mouth is physically formed to prohibit new sounds.

You're going to sound like dogshit to a Chinese speaker, even if you're comprehensible (tho your second point cuts against that).

First point is all well taken though and interesting but can't combat an adults set brain

There is no reason not to speak with correct tones though. All it takes is a lot of practice at the beginning and getting them right before moving on to more interesting parts of the language.

this weakens your ability to speak Chinese since you need to be aggressive and fast-speaking in China to not get rolled over on

Common phrases have a song-like quality to them though. You can just "sing" them the way you would sing a song lyric without thinking consciously about what tone each word has. I think that's helpful in the early stages where you're using the same canned lines over and over.

cr. the tones are absolutely essential if you dont want to sound like an idiot/are transacting in the language and want to be taken seriously. not speaking them is like replacing "buy" with "boy". the tones are inherent to the vowel sound, like shades of a vowel. People can figure out what you mean by context, but it's annoying to deal with much like listening to someone butcher english is.

This is just about 2 years. I'm guessing that "somewhat okay" put you at about B2. Definitely doable in 2 months of intelligent effort.

most "language learning" beyond pure grammar is really acculturation

you might understand the mechanics of a language/be able to construct basic sentences in a short period of time (probably still more than a month for difficult languages if you really want to sound fluent) but the difference between being able to express "i have a dog" and "you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold" or even "fuck you nigger" is a matter of understanding how people engage in that language, not just mechanics. it takes some level of time and immersion to achieve that level of nuance which is necessary for real fluency. same goes for learning any discipline really.

and that's besides the fact that it just takes time to be able to use a language unconsciously.

I started studying Italian intensely a day or two before leaving. Or maybe I started in the airport; I can't remember. It was for a destination wedding so I had a lot of downtime while I was there, and spent every spare moment going through Italian systematically. By the end of my weeklong stay in Italy, I was at A2. Knowing French and Latin gave me a huge leg up, but there's no reason that someone else who's starting from scratch couldn't do the same in two or three weeks.

the best way to learn languages as an adult is similar to the best way to learn how to play music: transcribe.

i used to spend 8 hours transcribing 10 minute news clips. rewind, repeat, look up, write down. if you can hear it, you will eventually be able to speak it.

I read it. It's better than most traditional methods, but you're better off using Anki for 10 hours than spending the time reading a book that tells you to use Anki.

classes are a waste of time and usually detrimental. no need to hear a bunch of bad accents and memorize grammar rules in the abstract

having a teacher is not absolutely necessary, but can save you a TON of time if it's a good teacher. having a resource who can immediately answer questions or explain difficult concepts is a huge time saver, particularly for intuitive people who want to move very quickly through new concepts in order to connect as many dots as possible

teachers are also useful for any necessary mechanical instruction - for me (learning chinese), my teachers were invaluable for giving me immediate feedback on my tones and how to form my mouth/tongue, allowing me to progress much faster than i otherwise would

It's not impossible, but it will take considerable time and money (immersion classes, spending time in the country, etc.).
