Anyone purchased any tools they are really happy with?

I purchased a new SK 3/8 inch ratchet that I am very pleased with:

https://sktools.com/shop/3-8-dr-lp90-teardrop-ratchet.html

It has very smooth operation and the head is very low profile.

I also was able to put my Makita 1/2 high torque impact through its paces during a large project, and it performed flawlessly.

https://www.makitatools.com/products/details/XWT08Z

If you do any work on your cars, you need this (or Milwaukee's comparable offering) ASAP. It is a beast and, based on my experience, performs just as well as an air impact gun.

Buying pro level stuff like that SK ratchet seems like a bit of a waste unless you're making a living with it

I've been buying Tekton stuff for hand tools and am fairly impressed with them. I think the ratchet I own is this one:

https://www.tekton.com/3-8-inch-drive-x-7-inch-polished-quick-release-ratchet-1481

It's pretty inexpensive, yet features like having a 72-tooth ratchet make it feel like it has a definite step up on average household tools

I'm not a tool collector. So when I decide I need a particular tool, I buy it once, and that's it. I will use that ratchet and my other hand tools for 30 years, and with a little bit of luck, my son will use it for 60+ years. Given that time frame, I have no problem splurging on tools. Plus, there is an old school tool store in my city that I like buying from, and SK is their main hand tool line.

Tekton is a perfectly fine brand, though I vaguely recall some rumblings about them suffering from some quality issues.

If you are looking for budget tools, Protul is an excellent choice, if you can find it. Also, Sunex impact sockets are a great value.

But your son is going to end up buying his own ratchet unless you die early or you raise him as a faggot

I understand that good stuff lasts forever.

It's just that I need my own stuff before my old man passes his stuff on to me.

And I can buy 6 Tekton ratchets for the same price as one of the OP's SK ratchets.

I bought a set of milwaukee last year - sawzall, circular saw, drill and driver - its 180. The sawzall really came in handy recently when I was placing some broken parts on my weber and couldn't get an old rusted bolt off of it. Was also handy having both a drill and driver when I was building a workbench last year since I'd use one to drill a pilot hole and then use the other drive the screw into place.

Interesting. I like the idea and see why they would be useful. I usually buy Channellock brand pliers, but it doesn't look like they have anything comparable.

I bought a nice Bosch cordless drill + a set of Milwaukee bits that gets a lot of use. Also have a nice Milwaukee ratcheting screw driver w/ super solid bits in the handle that are compatible w/ power tools. A pair of "Vampliars" is a godsend to deal with messed up screws and bolts (look them up on Amazon). The Costco "complete" toolkit isn't terrible, especially since it comes in a neat little case that makes it super easy to keep in a trunk or just handy around the house; for $80-$100 it sells for, totally worth it.

Like an above poster said, Milwaukee tools are generally a Cr level of price / quality and have a good "feel" to them which is important for hand tools. You can certainly pay more, but I think it's diminishing value, though depends on the specific tool.

My first drill was a hand-me-down Makita when I was 12, and I have bought nothing but Makita ever sense.

If you do much drilling of metal, I strongly urge you to invest in a high quality drill bit set. They make life so much easier.

I bought this sander recently, because I had a lot of sanding to do and was concerned that it would take a long time to do manually:

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/corded/6033-21

But I only ended up using it for part of what I wanted to do because I couldn't get it to attach to the vacuum I had and it was throwing off way too much dust inside. Ended up finishing the job with just a sanding block, which didn't take as long as I expected.

Overall so far, it was kind of a waste of $50. But hey, at least I own a sander now.

I own probably around $50k in tools.

Dewalt tools are 180 but don't go for their entry level plastic shit that's like a kid's toy. Ryobi and Kobalt are SPS jokes.

I like Bosch tools, especially this laser. It has saved me tons of time on many diff projects. https://tinyurl.com/yb4trxj9

I own a paint sprayer but never use it and think rollers and brushes are probably better unless you get a really good spray set.

Kobalt hand tools used to be a great value, especially their sockets, but there they have switched suppliers a couple times since then and are now nothing special.

Paint sprayer is precisely the type of equipment that is ideal for renting, if for no other reason than to avoid having one more thing you cluttering up your house.

Also much better to rent a power floor sander from home depot if refinishing hardwoods. Don't do it with a belt sander or something you have at home unless you like punishing yourself.

One of the best rentals I did was this handheld power chisel to break up a concrete slab. With a hand chisel and sledgehammer that job would have taken a very painful liefetime

My most recent purchase (ignoring a stud finder) was a stihl leaf blower. I wanted a Husqvarna at first, but the local dealer had a limited inventory and the stihl looked like a good deal. So far I've only just used it for cleaning off the deck.

This is a unique tool inquiry: Can anyone recommend a good, highly accurate handheld fish scale?

I am going to be repacking the hub bearings in my truck and the factory service manual calls for using a fucking fish scale to set the preload, LOL. Obviously, the scale needs to be pretty damn accurate.
