No more mom and pop shops can afford new leases - once their old leases expire, they go out of business. NYC is far more "GC" than pretty much anywhere else I have lived. Family owned businesses can at least afford the rent in the suburbs - the suburbs are far more friendly to entrepreneurship that large cities these days.
Cities are populated mainly because there's a higher concentration of certain types of jobs in cities. This is directly correlated to GC. Nobody would want to live in a commune like a city if jobs were available in the suburbs or more rural areas.
There's nothing wrong with valuing space and having more land. I find that wanting to buy more land in the suburbs is less GC than other forms of consumption that you'd find in cities. Having more land means that you are buying unaltered space/earth as opposed to something manufactured and a direct product of GC. |

Cars are an inefficient way to transport people (few people per car and space that car takes up from parking). If you spend most of your money on roads then mass transit suffers and without mass transit you just get a sprawling network of roads, low-density development, and highways that are jam-packed.
