My BIGAGRO relatives do a lot of manual labor on their own (feeding cattle, horses, some tractor work, moving feed, etc.). My uncle is like 60 and still OK with doing the manual labor work, although one of his knees is not doing so great. |

Everything from framing, to roofing, to plumbing, to landscaping, to electrical, to plastering, to wood working, and probably a few thousand hours restoring old cars and doing maintenance and repair on new ones.
As a hobby, it’s all fine. But god help you if it is your job and you have to do it everyday. My uncle was a welder. He made good money, but his knees were shot at 50 and his eyes suffered. He also got cancer young probably because of chemical exposure.
Even working on a freezing cold car for a day sucks. Or pulling wire. Or replacing cast iron soil pipe (guess what travels though soil pipe). |

If you are an employer, your workers comp insurance is insane, and if you are an independent contractor god help you if you fall because even if you survive you will be destitute.
I can shingle a lowish pitch shingle roof no problem, but hauling pallets up there is killer (most crews run a big forklift). Tile/slate guys do well, but that is an art and no one pays for them much anymore. I hire the work out now unless it is an EPDM recoat or something. |
