From my class a few to Cornell. 1 legacy and the others were smart. 1 to Wharton. He's done really well. 2 to Yale but they were athletes. Year below us had 3 go to Harvard.
College prestige isn't a big thing in Buffalo and there are almost no Asians or Jews. Lots of people were happy to get a full scholly at, e.g., Alfred or Fordham and go for free.

Oh I see.
You remind me of myself 5 years ago.
I feel pretty lucky that I randomly wondered into STEM because I think its the safest bet for ~115 iq bros, especially if your ug doesn't have good finance/consulting recruiting. LS is an option but xo makes it seem pretty hellish and the debt is obviously scary.
Anyway - just be careful, I've known some people significantly smarter than I am that have gotten screwed because they didn't plan shit carefully during undergrad.

All the Ivies now have, what, 5% admissions rates.
Doubt I'd get in today.
Penn / Cornell were the easiest to get into in my day. Knew of students with 1200s scores who got into both although they were either AA or athletes.

Another guy went to Amherst i think. After that, a lot of the smartest kids came from modest families and went to Rutgers or the college of new jersey on scholarship then went on to become engineers or doctors.
A few went to "good" liberal arts schools like Bucknell and Lehigh or public ivies.
Basically everyone else went to sTTTate U or communiTTTy college.

From a public school in Wisconsin, about 1-2 a year go to HYPSM
It's worth nothing that NOBODY goes to the lower ivies. They aren't even in the conversation. People will go to Northwestern all day long before a going to a non-HYP ivy

Maybe 25% of the student body is rich. The rest are poor immigrants. Admissions is based on an SAT-like test offered only in 6th grade. It is race blind.
Another 50 students make it into the high school from the elementary school where admissions is based on IQ tests and interviews.
These students were prob the smartest people I’ve been around in my whole life. Most of them aren’t conventionally successfully and do super random things now. A lot of artists, social workers. Prob the two most famous recent alums are lin Manuel Miranda and Martin shrkeli.

Around 125 in my class. Second tier boarding school.
10-15 on average went to Ivies/Duke/Stanford. Half that to Penn.
Another 5 or so to AWS/Pomona
Around 40ish went to the rest of the top 25 LACs/universities between 15-30 on USNews.

Good question. I’ve wondered myself.
For many kids it’s a family tradition.
Regardless of college placement it’s all over the map where the students ended up in the long term. Many of the dullards who went to dull colleges have done very well. Even better than the Ivy bound kids. Some of the Ivy bound ended up working for NGOs or non profits or the arts and struggle to this day in NYC or Boston, while the stupid bros went into sales and make 400k and donate loyally to the alumni fund and will send their kids to boarding school.

Lower Ivies shouldn't really be put in the same category as Stanford/HYP/MIT/Caltech. It wasn't that hard to get into a lower Ivy even 10 years ago. Lots of people got into places like Penn/Cornell (but were rejected to schools like NU, top publics).
When I applied, Chicago had a greater than 50% acceptance rate...so your odds of getting in were super high.

nobody in my high school class got into an Ivy - but I grew up in a part of the country where nobody cares about or applies to lower ivies. So we just applied to HYP and local schools.
I have classmates who went to top tier local private colleges that probably could have gotten into Brown or Cornell.

About 20 out of a class of just under 100.
9 to HYPSM
I think 10 or 11 to other Ivies, Duke, Chicago, Northwestern
This was the mid-90s.

On the West Coast, people don't really apply to the lower Ivies. They just apply to maybe the top Ivies like HYP, Stanford, MIT, Caltech and the UCs. Or sometimes they only apply to Stanford and the UCs because they are intent on staying in California.
I think the focus on the Ivies is an East Coast thing.
