assuming it hasnn't damaged other systems, you can fly a plane with only one engine remaining. with no engines you can glide for a long distance too.

This is correct. Have been on plane that blew an engine. You can keep going as long as you are gliding distance to an airport. But we had to land where we took off and change planes.

if you have everybody onboard jump up at the same time, but while they're in midair yank their seats toward the ceiling (easiest if you're hanging out to something you can get a good grip on, like an aisle armrest), you can incrementally pull the plane upward which helps keeps it airborne

There's a huge difference between "engine blows out and stops working" and "engine blows out, explodes, sends shrapnel into the cabin, and tears holes in the fuselage". The former is, if not easy, not horribly difficult, since modern planes are designed to fly like that. The latter is fucking difficult and is why mainline airlines routinely hire accomplished military pilots.

Explain why the latter is more difficult (assuming wing and other vital systems are not affected). Definitely more terrifying tho.

Because the planes are designed to fly with at least one non-operating engine. They are not designed to fly with holes in the fuselage and shrapnel everywhere.

EDIT: It might not be more difficult to physically fly, if you had an empty plane, but there are a ton more considerations in play when you have a flight full of passengers. Plus once the fuselage is compromised, there's a ton of risk for other things going wrong, and if there's shrapnel spreading everywhere, you can't assume that "no vital systems were hit" will remain true.

TCR. This was a tough landing. Hole in fussilage and plane would have been listing and dropping altitude. Pilot was a lady boss. Could easily have been a crash. Did you hear her tower call? Was very calm.

I rate them, I think, as 180.

It's not hard to fly a modern plane. They're 95% automated. But there's a ton of truth to the notion that where pilots (and in-flight staff like flight attendants) excel, and why you can't completely automate this, is because it takes an insane amount of skill and training to respond calmly and rationally to an emergency. It's like the previous poster pointed out, the WN pilot didn't just land the plane safely, she was on the radio with the tower basically just talking things through like this was a normal occurrence. That's pretty damn impressive.

I mean it’s impressive in the abstract but it’s their job. I assume the pilots who start crying when they lose an engine in their simulator training don’t pass. Kind of like ER residents who can’t stand the sight of blood.

Oh, agreed completely. I mostly meant that it's easy to discount what they have to be able to do, because 99.99% of the time, the pilots can put on the autopilot and take a nap, and the flight attendants don't have to worry about much more than the unruly guy in business class demanding another gin-and-tonic. But when shit like this happens, it's 100+ lives on the line, and more often than not, they get it done.

Fair enough enough on the edit, but that just means you need to get down on the ground fast, which is SOP for losing an engine. Another southwest pilot literally had an emergency landing today do to an engine bird strike.

http://avherald.com/h?article=4b77d3dc&opt=0

That being said, nothing but deserved praise for captain, first officer, flight attendants, and atc.

Right, and I know I was editing after-the-fact, but this wasn't just losing an engine. Bird strikes happen, fuel line issues happen, etc., and there are SOPs for those. It's not "routine", but any pilot with a modicum of experience will know what to do. What happened here was an engine completely fucking exploding into the cabin, and that's not exactly something you can have a checklist for, you just have to know what you're doing, have the experience to stay calm, and know how to adapt. Which is why having experienced military pilots is such a priority for the big US airlines.

I'm also pretty curious as to who fucked up here, maintenance, management, or the manufacturer. I'm guessing a combination of 1 and 2, and wouldn't be shocked to hear that there was deferred maintenance and/or cut-rate parts at play here.
