For my kids I put $100 in an Acorns account every month. When they start getting an allowance they’ll have to start contributing some portion of that $100, but basically I’ll pay most of it until they are working. They will have to commit to putting $100 in there until they are 30 and then I’ll give them control with a pledge to continue for the rest of their working life. At 6.5 percent that guarantees $1 million by retirement.

But my point is to get them greedy for savings.

No, it’s all scaled to “Aggresive” but I am assuming 6.5 worst case. The basic point is that by age 30 they’ve saved a little less than $40k and have more than $100k.

We spend more than that per child (nearly $150,000) for K-12 education.

According to a Georgetown Study, https://cew.georgetown.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/collegepayoff-complete.pdf page 3, a high school diploma holder can expect to earn $1.3 million over a lifetime. $32,600 a year.

A investment of $150,000 when born, at 4% compounded annually would be $303,872.48. Taking that $303,872.48 compounded over a 40 year time period at the same 4% would be $1,458,898.04. A net gain over the value of a high school education. Add on whatever noneducated lifetime of labor wages and that could be comparable to lifetime earnings of a bachelor degree, at $2.3 million.

Calculated at the S&P Annual historical gain of 10%, the numbers are $833,987.60 and $37,745,657.93.

Just to give you a perspective on how much we potentially waste on educating the masses.
