I've gone on dates were I'll take a girl and just stroll around South of Broad, looking at the houses, and 32 Legare is always on that list. I've been walking by that house for 20 years. |

The city has changed dramatically since '96. I'm not sure if it's for the better. On one hand, Charleston was built to be a place of tremendous wealth and it's nice to see it's recent return to form. On the other hand, most of the people who are buying these homes are not local, and much of authentic aspects of the city are being lost to high end development and this sort-of white-on-white gentrification that's occurred. You walk down King Street today and there's two Starbucks with a Williams Sonoma & Apple Store. It didn't used to be like that. What happened to it: "The sale of the Calhoun Street property to Sears, Roebuck and Company was finalized on 13 September 1951, and the old buildings were demolished between early February and late April 1952. Despite the objections of the city, the commissioners, and the community in general, the Sears company razed the Orphan House Chapel on Vanderhorst Street in late June and early July 1953."
As I under it, Sears never built their store there and abandoned the property after the orphanage was razed. People still talk about this shit. |
