Anyone ever have this problem?
I meant to go solo Jan 1, had a talk with my boss in mid December about either leaving or drastically changing my pay structure based on what I brought in (he encouraged me not to "go backwards" doing criminal work). We never really came to a definite decision because immediately after, my biggest client (meaning they are my own client, I would depend on taking them with me if I went solo) sent me a M&A type deal that was worth quite a bit of money. This type of work is out of my wheelhouse, and definitely different from what I usually do for them, but my boss knows it very well so I stuck around my firm for the past few months working on it. Still working on post closing stuff, seems like it will never end. My firm was nice enough to toss me $10k for bringing in the business.
In the meantime, another of my own personal clients have been increasingly sending me more and more work every week, and they always tell me how impressed they are with my work. I can do most of it on my own, but there are things every week that I don't know how to do and need my bosses help.
How do you ever solve this type of situation? I am desperate for a change, but the clients I would depend on if I went solo keep trusting me more and sending me more complex work that I don't know how to do. Probably billed close to $85-100k for them this year alone.

maybe you don't go solo, but you bring a partner or two with you. people always think the grass is greener in law firms.
protip: it usually is
you can't cover everything, but if you can bring an m&a person with you, that would be ideal to snag the big fish
if not, maybe you take the client out and see if they'll stay with you except for the m&a
