When no such promotion is taking place, you can often get a better loan through non-affiliated banks. This is true even if some other promotion (e.g., cash back offer) is contingent upon using the captive finance company. Every dealer I have worked with would finance the car through the captive finance company, then refinance it with the institution offer the lowest rate. |

i also had quotes from other lenders at 1-1.5% for 5 years, but didn't even bother bringing them up. |

The thing is, when you get a great rate through the dealer, you're really just buying down the rate, but it's not like you can look to your dealer and say cut off another $500 and I'll pay you cash.
