The banks associated with each manufacturer, e.g., Toyota Financial, GM Financial, Nissan Motor Acceptance Corp. They usually offer below market rates to push sales of their parent company's models.

oh I've always heard them called "captive finance corporations"

How do I get a quote from them? Or do I have to get from a dealer?

What I do is negotiate price with my own financing, then at the end say I'll do dealer financing if they can beat my rate from the credit union.

This is true when they are running a finance promotion.

When no such promotion is taking place, you can often get a better loan through non-affiliated banks. This is true even if some other promotion (e.g., cash back offer) is contingent upon using the captive finance company. Every dealer I have worked with would finance the car through the captive finance company, then refinance it with the institution offer the lowest rate.

This (i.e., lucrative financing from the manufacturer) is especially prevalent with "certified" used cars.

i walked into the dealership, negotiated for the used car i wanted, pulled out my checkbook to buy it outright, and the dealer said "they're offering you 0 down/0 interest for three years, you want that instead?"

i also had quotes from other lenders at 1-1.5% for 5 years, but didn't even bother bringing them up.

My goal is to be a cash buyer from the dealer's perspective, i.e. have financing lined up before I walk into the dealership so the dealer doesn't waste my time or try to obfuscate anything by discussing financing terms. With the dealer I want to negotiate sales price alone.

Usually, you need some affiliation with a certain group to join a credit union

can you basically assume that the rate Pen Fed is offering is the lowest? are they the low cost leader?

they are pretty low, but I can't say there isn't any bank/cred union lower than them and you may be offered lower through a car makers finance company (e.g. honda finance). The thing is, when you get a great rate through the dealer, you're really just buying down the rate, but it's not like you can look to your dealer and say cut off another $500 and I'll pay you cash. It's fucked up - the dealership would prefer you finance than pay cash.
