The future of the Asia Pacific turns on the United States ability to unify the major players. They dont even need to be antagonistic to China, they just need to have optiins other than bi-lateral agreements that favor China.
This is why TPP was important. It could have helped pave the way for a system of alliances in Asia to balance against China. |

It's decision time right now in the South China Sea and ASEAN isn't on the US bandwagon, drifting to China's position or not contesting it due to China being a more important regional force. No doubt that is the direction of unified Korea.
A unified Korea would not at all work in favor of any US plan to limit China. |

Depending on how it played out, we would likely be limited to Guam, DGAR, Guam, and maybe Perth.
Outside of the US network of alliances, ASEAN is the only non-Chinese controlled multilateral body in Asia. Yes, they wouldnt take sides in a conflict, but they certainly arent in favor of China’s 9-dash line and excessive maritime claims. Their members would vastly prefer a benign hegemon a world away to a behemoth on their doorstep. |

Basically China has bought veto power in ASEAN through Cambodia. This has prevented ASEAN even writing a very angry letter about the 9-dash line.
