Of course not. Partners in big law firms are congenial, confrontational, and not at all bitter.
And fuck the boomer/Gen X partner who likely sent that. When the firm lays people off does it say "oh, we'd like to give you 6 months severance to get you through the hardship we've imposed on you?" Unless they do that, then that asshole can get the fuck out of here with the "you owe us" bullshit.

I've heard from friends who left that partners very often say they're "disappointed." Doesn't matter that these friends were not going to get breakfast and would have gotten Lathamed at the first sign of trouble.
That said, most partners seem to be very cordial to people leaving or ignore them.

When I actually came into the office, yea. Occasionally I would have the odd task to do but most of the time it was come in around 1130 to get lunch with office friends, surf web all afternoon, then hit up office gym around 6 pm then go home. Most of the time I was only coming in 3/5 days of the week though. Then once I officially got the talk I gave up all pretenses and stopped coming in at all.
Was pretty 180 - could just wander around my city aimlessly for 7 hours a day, got in great shape, fully rested each day, no need for stims, etc.
The partner who fired me was the one for whom I did 80% or so of my work, and after he fired me he tried to guide me and be a mentor or some shit for my next steps. I just loled and ignored all of his emails.

The hilarious part is accounting firms routinely keep people around, squeeze every bit out of them they can and lay them off on april 16.
the guy didnt even leave in the middle of busy season. he left in fucking january. thats fine. youre telling me he has to stick it out for another entire busy season to be a class act? while he's making like $60k? go fick yourself.
