XOXO Steve Sailer.

http://www.unz.com/isteve/why-is-there-so-little-concern-about-height-prejudice/

In 1895, to be tall suggested that you enjoyed a privileged upbringing, which is a good thing in a mate, because it suggests you also are in better health and have richer relatives.

On the other hand, these days, height is mostly heritable. And it’s not clear that being genetically taller is all that much better. For example, it modestly boosts one’s chances of cancer, presumably because you have more cells than can go wrong. I

had cancer in my 30s and it really wasn’t a good thing.

So, our culture’s prejudice in favor of the tall is kind of obsolete.

And yet nobody cares.

Good comment:

How much of Robert Reich’s utter insufferableness can be attributed to the fact that he’s a mini-man of 4’11″?

I would guess it’s because height prejudice disproportionately affects men.

The Western world is intensely gynocentric, i.e. obsessed with the wants and needs and issues of women but cares very little about men. Men compete for wealth, status, etc., and the ones who come up short (sometimes literally) are thought to merit very little societal concern as a group.

You can compare height bias with bias against fat people, which gets a good deal of attention. Presumably because bias against fat people disproportionately affects women.

A great example of this was the recent boosterseatgate, where lots of people mocked Mark Zuckerberg for having counselors smart enough to realize that people irrationally respect and trust taller men more. Few people stopped to think about whether they could actually justify their heightism, because unlike certain other -isms you don’t hear too much about it. (Maybe if it became a civil rights issue for mestizos? “A key feature of white supremacy is the stigmatization of Latnix immigrants as short-statured…”)
