Imagine: dozens of teenagers (typically between 60-70% girls) are crowded into an auditorium or classroom of a local law school, or sometimes the largest conference room of a local law firm. They are all there to take the law teen promise: to vow solemnly before each other and before the law that after college they will attend law school.
Each law teen has a sponsor. The sponsor must be either a current law student at an accredited law school or law center, or a practicing attorney. Lots of law teens have a family member as their sponsor. For those who don't have a lawyer in the family, there will typically be junior to mid level associates from local corporate law firms, sent there as part of their firm's pro bono program. The lonesome law teens are paired up with these associates on a first come basis.
As the ceremony begins, some law teens make small talk with their sponsors, peppering them with questions about what it's like to practice law. Some exchanges will be awkward; an urban legend tells of one female law teen who asked her sponsor, a mid-level at a local V5, if all female lawyers get big butts. Other law teens are so impressed and intimidated by the presence of a real, practicing attorney that they are unable to speak and stand silently by their sponsor.
The ceremony is usually presided over by a local district court judge or, if held on a law school campus, by a law professor or law dean. Sometimes, especially in rural areas, that role might instead be filled by a local lawyer who advertises on billboards and bus stops and thus is famous to everyone in the crowd.
During the ceremony, all law teens in attendance swear an oath that they will attend law school after they graduate from college. Some take a second oath that after law school they will obtain a second degree, typically a Tax LLM or a SJD. Once the promise is made, the sponsor puts a ring on the newly minted law teen's fingers. The ring represents the promise, and tells any college OCI recruiters that this student is off limits: he or she is destined for the K->JD route.
As the law teens file out of the room, representatives from Westlaw and Lexis are there, handing out little cards that give free, limited access to their legal search tools. The law teens have their first decision to make: are they Westlaw teens or Lexis teens?
