WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump on Sunday claimed North Korea has agreed to “denuclearization” before his potential meeting with Kim Jong Un. But that’s not the case.

North Korea said Friday it would suspend nuclear tests and intercontinental ballistic missile launches ahead of summits with the U.S. and South Korea. Kim also said a nuclear test site would be closed and “dismantled” now that the country has learned how to make nuclear weapons and mount warheads on ballistic rockets.

But the North has stopped short of saying it has any intention of abandoning its nuclear arsenal, with Kim making clear that nukes remain a “treasured sword.”

Trump nonetheless tweeted Sunday that the North has “agreed to denuclearization (so great for World), site closure, & no more testing!”

nothing feels more mouth breather-ey than turning this into a partisan issue. no one knows what north korea has agreed to, what the americans intend to concede or what the broad outlines of any agreement would look like. neither can anyone say what previous administrations knew or the options they could reasonably pursue.

i’m skeptical as fuck that nk gives up its nukes since the regime (rationally) sees them as critical to its survival. so having potus sit down w kim could end up looking like an awful mistake. but it’s too early to say.

1) Do nothing and permit NK to do whatever it wants (Obama strategy)

2) Attempt to pressure them to negotiate and bring NK into some form of normalcy or compliance to defuse tension between them, us and our allies (Trump strategy).

it’d be fantastic if nk agreed to give up nukes, dismantled its program and permitted robust iaea inspections into perpetuity. but this would be incredibly stupid from kim’s perspective. at least absent gigantic concessions (eg total reunification on favorable terms) that seems unrealistic

given that, it’s not obvious to me that the least shitty option isn’t letting nk have nukes, arming sk to the teeth and promising NK total annihlation if they even act like they might use a nuke.

all i know is turning this into a dumb political debate should be met with instant death smh
