Bo Jackson was one of the greatest athletes of all time. Look at him now. How can this guy not want to lift and run and get back in shape?

This is typical of a lot of ex-athletes. Is it they just got used to eating like shit because they could and then they stopped being active? It got too difficult to train or their body's started breaking down? Sheer laziness without coaches demanding they work out? It seems like ex-athletes either channel their competitiveness into other pursuits (e.g. Herschel Walker) and remain fit or become total fat asses with nothing in between.

Its hard as hell to go from eating 5000 calories a day to a normal sedentary diet.

Yeah, but why don't they work out or remain active at all? How do you go from being an elite athlete to doing nothing?

Because their bodies are worn out and the level of activity required to burn 5,000 cal/day is nuts. Weight maintenance is mostly about calorie maintenance.

Bo also had a very serious hip injury that’s not going to get better as he gets older.

That's true. He probably has lingering injury issues and a typical southern black guy's diet. Bad combo.

It's both continuing to eat like shit and many have lingering problems from injuries they had during their playing years and avoid working out

they get old and their metabolism slows plus their entire life theyve had a structure where getting their body to peak performance was the entire focus of their day. im sure these dudes do continue to exercise but just not nearly as much and they prob just eat whatever they feel like. this is just basically called getting old

At least for football players I think most these guys have chronic injuries that make it impossible for them to lead active lives.

Even a guy like Steve Kerr has serious back problem that have kept him from doing a lot of stuff. He still watches his diet thought, it appears.
