Biodegradable plastics will be the future but not for quite some time. 300 million tons of plastic are PRODUCED every year and you think a ban, let alone any type of government mandated reduction in usage, is feasible in your lifetime? Anything beyond PR stunts like banning straws will never happen. Look around you. Plastic is literally everywhere and consumer consumption is a tiny (single digit) percentage of global plastics end-users.

yeah this was a Heritage "study" which used every single assumption in favor of disposable plastic and every single assumption against reusable. eg, assumed organic cotton, which uses much more water and energy. but why would the cotton need to be organic?

The best solution environmentally is reusable plastic (not cloth) bags. but the average american is too lazy & feckless - and this absolutely includes me - to reliably use them. and the stores coddle us; we're conditioned to expect an unlimited supply of free reusable plastic bags so that's what we do.
